Ear modification: bad for your elf
Filed under: Culture, Events, real-world, News items
One of the more bizarre stories to surface on the internet this week is the Modern Plasztikai Sebészet -- henceforth referred to as the "Elf Ear Clinic". The site is almost certainly fake -- but it's an idea that isn't too far off being a reality, and surely must appeal to a percentage of MMO players somewhere.Real world influencing MMOs is nothing new -- but MMOs being able to influence physical aspects of real life is something new entirely, Second-Life excluded. And it's maybe just a little bit scary. They can say faun-clubs all they want, but what they really mean is level 70 night elf druids.
And just so you know; pointy elf ears wouldn't necessarily allow you to hear better anyway. Ear shape and hearing is individual, not universal -- having elongated pointy ears would change how you hear sounds, and after years of your brain interpreting sounds from your original ear shape it's unlikely to be an improvement. Oh well.
Would *you* be tempted to get a pair of elf ears? Or is this a step too far in body modification?

Gah. I know a girl with elf-like ears (she was born with them). They look bizarro =(
What's next? People getting hair plugs all over their bodies so they can become furries?
Oh... Crap. Now I've jinxed it ;_;

I was born with elf-like ears, and I was made fun of so I used to turn my ears, and wrinkle them in ways to approximate a curve and tape them that way while at home. Eventually it worked and my ears were mostly rouded by 6th grade (one still has a minor point). Every day I wish I hadn't done that though. I would completely get them [mildly] pointed again in a heartbeat, and something as profound as that picture wouldn't take much considering either. I would never do something as obnoxious as the Night Elves in WoW though.

I have to admit i would be highly tempted to have that done. Of course even/when that sorta procedure is actually available it wont be covered by insurance and it will be insanely expensive. But yea id do it in a heart beat. Don't care if i get pointed at.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? those pictures are ALL photoshopped. don't be fooled by this ridiculous article & pictures. just look closely. a tool (on adobe photoshop) easily dragged the tip of the ear out in a point like fashion to look like an elf. if you believe this you're simply falling for someone's practical joke.

Well yeah...We know that. It says as much in the article. I'm all for it! And if they ever get the chance to make furries too, I'm becoming a siamese cat!! Meow!

Amy, girl,
You are so right on. I am so glad to see that someone gets it.
I NEVER go on message boards. But today I did. I really like the show "Brotherhood" on Showtime. It is a gangster thing. One of the main guys is just a total sociopath (basically, doesn't care about right or wrong, just a complete murderer). And all the people were talking about if he was happy his girlfriend was having a baby and how he is so much more sensitive this season!
Thanks for the breath of fresh air!

Umm yeah. You can also notice their hair is styled exactly the same. Same little hairs out of place. In the one with the long earrings she has the same rubberband in and it's even wrapped exactly the same. And the guy with the sideburns...they didn't fill in at all? LOL This is pretty funny but I don't think the pointy ears look bad. :o)

Just as wannabe vampires have paid for implant fangs, I'm sure some elfin wannabe will pay for the ears.

Of course those pics are photo-shopped. But these ones probably aren't:

Basically, cut a divot out of the top of the ear, and sew the two sides together. It's not that complicated (though I'm sure there are only a few people in the world who can reliably do the procedure with aesthetically pleasing results).

I always thought my daughter would look cute with Elf Ears - when I get close enough, I pull up the top of her ears to show how they'd look. She's always thought I was nuts, but now she can see I'm not the only one. Every year for her birthday, until she was 21, I offered to pay for the surgery and she turned me down. Now she's 22 and it's her responsibility if she wants to look adorable and trendy!

Not true - the clothes are all different - and the hair is NOT the same in all the pictures on the associated site.......besides, it's a simple procedure, and there are folks out there who have been having themselves "altered" to look like lizards, cats, devils - the works. There's even a black boy who grew up to have himself made to look like a freak!! Guess who that is? This is nothing........

Even if this is a fake site-this is old news. People have been doing this kind of stuff for YEARS. Its nothing new.

How ridiculous! Obviously this is fake for now, but the fact that people would actually consider spending money on it... there are babies dying in 3rd world countries and people would rather spend their money to look like an elf?! Lol! This is a crazy world

Ehhh, I wish I had elf ears... mine from Ardani Costumes take a bit of awhile to put on.... but I walk around with them all I want, screw the people who point. Hehe ^^ And this IS quite old old news, this is just getting around to people the human race is a lot slower than I thought.
And my Ardani ears are big and obnoxious like Night Elves, I think they're much cuter than the little ones.... too much like a Hobbit or something, hehe.
