Get from Rags to Riches in EVE Online

Unfortunately, just from the dearth of proper coverage, it looks like that Rags to Riches contest in EVE Online that we mentioned a while back kind of petered out. All of the participants were supposed to be blogging the task of creating a character from scratch and raising as much money as they could, but save for a few day one and day two blogs, there's naught to be found. However, even though we don't know exactly who won, Wiseones has posted a very informative and interesting blog about how his character ended up after the 14-day trial ended. The grand total: 8.5 million ISK. Pretty impressive! And while he did a lot of things (piracy, mining, trading, missions) it sounds like he got the biggest haul from going to war-- he ducked into a space battle, looted a couple of nice T2 items from a wreckage, and got the heck out of Dodge. So if you want some quick cash in low sec, join up with an alliance, go to war, and scavenge from the shadows.
Other tips? Do all the tutorial missions (duh-- you should have already done that), buy as little as you possibly can (which means looting everything from rats), and seriously, pick the bones of wartorn ships clean, even if you have to make a deal with an alliance to do it. Wiseones says a guide to newbie money-making is forthcoming to the forums (send us a link!), but there are some nice tips if you want to make money fast in the inky void of space.

train up salvaging and tractor beams, and salvage your missions, and you'll make 10x what you'd normally make for lvl 1 and lvl 2 missions. and you can train up the connections skills and move up to lvl 2 missions in a destroyer pretty quickly.

Wow, I'm internet famous! Well. You know what I mean.
I had no idea anyone else was still looking at this, pretty cool.
The end result of the contest was that I won, apparently nobody else even submitted anything or made more than like 250,000 isk or so. Yargh! It was a fun contest, here’s hoping it happens again.
I’m a student and am crazy busy with school right now, but once things calm down a little bit that “Newbie Guide to Making Money” will certainly be made.

What Ed said. When I was new I had no idea that salvaging was the way to make money. I was lucky that I was actually salvaging wrecks, but just saving the stuff in my hangar, having no idea what to do with it. "Maybe I'll be able to build something with it someday," I was thinking. Then someone told me that you can salvage wrecks and sell the stuff. That's when I started raking in the millions. It's also when I learned that those mysterious trade skills had some uses after all.
