Cryptic announces Champions Online, their new superhero MMO

Stop the presses! Eurogamer tackles the scoop by Game Informer magazine that Cryptic Studio's new MMO, to be developed for both PCs and consoles, will be another superhero game called Champions Online. Scoop indeed; the news isn't even up on Cryptic's site! While it may seem strange to set up yet another superhero-themed MMO while City of Heroes/City of Villains is still getting lots of play, this could be Cryptic's way of reusing assets created for Marvel Universe Online. No word yet on whether the title has anything to do with the classic roleplaying game Champions, which is itself all about superheroes, but the addition of 'Online' to the name might be an indicator. We'll be going to GDC where Cryptic will probably announce this, so keep your ears on!

They can pull it off. Why? NCsoft, as a company, if one step away from "Village Idiot" status. For as many games as they have unleashed on the masses they just don't seem to know what they are doing so I wouldn't put it past the people who actually *made* CoX to supplant it. Beyond that there's also the fact that high fantasy dominates MMO's(read: played out, tough arena to compete in) but the super hero genre is still rather fresh.
If they put forth a decent product and they get some good press I would imagine they could do suprisingly well.

I was absolutely in love with City of Heroes when it came out, but eventually got really tired of the fact that the game was insanely repetitive. I understand they tried to fix a lot of that in the years since, but I still hear it's basically the same thing over and over all the way through endgame. As grindy as WoW can get some time, it still has enough variety that it's kept me interested for 3 years now.
If Cryptic can take all the good that they came up with for CoX and correct the repetitive factor...oh yeah...I'm there.

Sweet!
Champions was the first RPG I ever played and the most the most. COH/COX borrowed alot from the system so it will be interesting to see how they do it. One thing about Champions was the level of customization you could do with a character.
The nice thing about Champions was there was a "world" that was created around the core system, but it was pretty loose and vague so it could be fit into any campaigns.
The only require for me is there better be Dr Destroyer and Eurostar in the game. :D

I think a competitor for CoX is exactly what that game needs to stay ambitious and fresh. Especially if it's from the old dev group. Kinda like Rock Band and Guitar Hero, the gamer really can't lose if these two games compete.

Champions was a fantastic system. The flaws I find in CoX's game system are absent in Champions'. I hope they can translate it faithfully.
