LOTS more LotRO to come; Turbine extends LotR license
Filed under: Fantasy, Lord of the Rings Online, MMO industry, News items
We've had punters out there guess at just how long Lord of the Rings Online might be able to last, as well as one particularly detailed and precise look at how Tolkien's Middle-earth might unfold over the years, but Turbine has now given official confirmation that they are in it for the long haul. A new press release (posted in full after the break) sent to us from Turbine's PR company states that they have extended their license agreements with Tolkien Enterprises for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit until 2014, with the rights to claim them all the way up to 2017 if they so choose. The president and CEO of Turbine, Jim Crowley, affirmed his faith in the license -- and honestly, it's not a bad horse to back -- saying, "With the recent announcement of what are sure to be two blockbuster films based on The Hobbit and a sequel, we expect the success of the license and our relationship with Tolkien Enterprises to grow for years to come." Only time will tell whether Turbine can give LotRO and associated games legs until 2014 (or 2017!), but with this agreement under their belts they can develop away for the foreseeable future. Hit the jump to read the press release in its entirety.

Guess the Turbine folks havn't heard about the lawsuit the Tolkien Estate has brought against New Line Cinema for lack of payment.
Part of that lawsuit is seeking to revoke the rights New Line has for the two Hobbit movies.

The suit could also potentially have direct effects on LOTRO. If Tolkein Enterprises is taking the view that they don't owe the estate money for the films, they're probably taking the same view for the game. I believe the estate asked for a restraining order against the Hobbit films, so it isn't entirely far-fetched to imagine them coming after the game as well. Today's agreement is only worth the paper/bandwidth it's printed on if Tolkein Enterprises still has the rights when the dust settles....

LotRO is based on the books, not the movies, so any deal involving the movies falling through doesn't affect LotRO. Turbine has the rights to The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but not the Silmarillion or any other extra stuff. LotRO has nothing to do with New Line's not paying the Tolkien Estate what they owed.

Correct Rogue, but their referencing it in the release as a method of promoting the title was the bit i was referring to.
LoTRO is in no way shape or form part of the Lawsuit.

LOTRO is not involved in the CURRENT lawsuit. If a judge rules that Tolkein Enterprises owes the estate a cut of the money from the movies and people with agreements with TE (e.g. New Line) cannot continue to produce new material (e.g. The Hobbit) until things regarding the movies are settled, the estate could file an additional suit about LOTRO to get the same terms enforced against Turbine.

Green, the Lawsuit IS NOT WITH Tolkien Enterprises its with New Line Cinema.
