New MMO announced from the Entropia Universe platform: Planet Calypso

Filed under: Entropia Universe, Business models, MMO industry, New titles, Virtual worlds

It seems Entropia Universe has fully embraced the "world building" aspect of its virtual space. Evolving from a virtual world to a virtual world development platform, MindArk has announced the creation of a new subsidiary named First Planet, which will operate, develop and market a new MMO entitled Planet Calypso. Since this MMO will be created through Entropia's guidance and tools, it will be built on the Entropia Universe platform and be considered one of EU's planets.

The scope of First Planet won't stop at Planet Calypso, though. It has been created to "solely focus on platform development suitable for a wide range of industries interested in utilizing the opportunities of the 3D internet." Other upcoming planets include Creative Kingdom, China Recreative Dreamland, Next Island and See. Find out more information on the press release and MindArk's plans with their upcoming platforms at Worlds in Motion or the Entropia Universe website.

FusionFall announces subscription model with free-to-play areas

Filed under: Business models, New titles, News items, Browser, Casual, FusionFall

Cartoon Network's eagerly anticipated first entry into the MMO genre, FusionFall, is set to launch next Wednesday. For those who have checked out the Preview currently going on, and may have been wondering just what kind of pricing Cartoon Network would be implementing, you need wonder no longer. Today we got word that the powers that be at Cartoon Network have decided to run it as a subscription based model, but with a very solid free-to-play portion.

Free-to-play members will have access to all areas in the Future Zone, which includes quite a few of the Cartoon Network favorites, such as The Kids Next Door, The Powerpuff Girls, and Samurai Jack to name a few. The paid membership offers not only the Future Zone, but the rest of the game's many areas. In addition, traveling to these areas will unlock additional cool things for your character, such as different gear, new nanos (pets), and more. Paid subscription accounts will cost a very reasonable $5.95 per month, offering full access for one account. For those who have lots of kids who don't want to share an account - or want to check out this game for themselves - Cartoon Network also offers a family plan: at $9.95 per month, you can have four paid accounts to enjoy all the content that FusionFall has to offer.

Why you should be playing Tabula Rasa: It's free!

Filed under: Sci-fi, Culture, Game mechanics, MMO industry, Opinion, Tabula Rasa, Education, Why You Should Be Playing

If you're still postponing the dive into NCsoft's Tabula Rasa, because of that whole shut-down thing, I wanted to just let you know that you may be missing out on a historical opportunity here. How often is it that you get to play a game through its last remaining weeks, and actually witness the end first-hand?

Right now the game itself is even free to download. I'll explain more on this later, but if you're feeling extra generous, or you're big into souvenirs from dead MMOs, you can pick it up on Amazon or most brick-and-mortar shops for $5 US. If you want to spend the extra cash for a Collector's Edition, to get some dogtags, an AFS Challenge coin, a "Making of Tabula Rasa" DVD and more, you can do that for $15-$30 usually. Or perhaps, you'll be lucky enough to find a dumpster full of boxes behind an EB Games somewhere.

Global Agenda announces closed beta signups and target launch date

Hi-Rez Studios has announced today that their spy-fi MMO Global Agenda will be entering closed beta in the second quarter of 2009. On top of that, the press release states that the game itself is slated for release in late 2009. This is certainly exciting news for those fans who have been following the game since they left stealth mode just last year.

"Our alpha testing has gone very well - in terms of game stability and, most importantly, very positive feedback from an active alpha community," said Todd Harris, Executive Producer of Hi-Rez Studios. "Based on these results we are excited about aggressively growing the Global Agenda player community in Beta." Be sure to check out the entire press release, linked below, for more information on what will be included in the closed beta, and how you can get your hands on an application.

Hands on with the City of Heroes Mac Client

Filed under: Betas, Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Hands-on

Recently NCsoft gave us the chance to get our hands on the beta version of the City of Heroes Mac client, letting us finally run around Paragon City and the Rogue Isles from the comfort of Mac OS X.

While the client doesn't deliver anything new to the City of Heroes gameplay table, it is a really well done port over to OS X. The client still connects to the main City of Heroes servers, allowing Mac users to play seamlessly with their PC friends. Nothing like EverQuest for Mac, more like the EVE Online port for OS X.

What really surprised me about this port is just how well it runs on the Mac compared to other games. Especially when the Mac in question is a laptop that sports an Intel integrated graphics chip instead of a powerhouse nVidia or ATI video card.

Anti-Aliased: Why leveling content is more important than endgame

Filed under: Culture, Game mechanics, Opinion, Virtual worlds, Anti-Aliased

Hey there 'Aliased readers! I've got a bunch to cover this week, and it's mostly derived from last week's Anti-Aliased. Point number three on my short list of what MMOs need to learn was that leveling content was more important than endgame content, and that seemed to put people into a state of panic. Now normally I don't like revisiting topics when they create massive anger because revisiting won't do them any good. You'll still be angry, sending rabid squirrels in boxes to my house, and I'll still be wearing my protective suit when I open my mail.

This, however, is a special case. I think one of the reasons we have such a divide is because we're not looking at it in the same way. I'm approaching this topic from more of a business angle rather than the angle of a player. So, this week, we're going to look at it from both the angle of the player and of the business-person, as well as take in your points and arguments from last week's comment discussion. It's like a Mythbusters Redux, except we're not going to be blowing anything up, sadly.

A big list of MMOs to watch in 2009

Filed under: Aion, Darkfall, Huxley, Jumpgate Evolution, MMO industry, New titles, Stargate Worlds, The Agency, Chronicles of Spellborn, Free Realms, Champions Online, LEGO Universe, FusionFall, DC Universe Online, Star Wars: The Old Republic

Over at The Vault, they've put up an exhaustive list of all the MMO titles you should have your eye on throughout the new year. While they sort of term it as thought it's a big list of games coming out this year, we think they know it's unlikely all of those games are going to be released in the next twelve months. With that in mind, if you aren't sure what games you should have on your radar (and you haven't clicked our handy "upcoming MMOs" widget above), this massive list will bring you up to date.

Here at Massively, of course, we've been doing our own level best to keep you updated on a lot of these titles, be they AAA superhero games like Champions Online or DC Universe Online. We've talked fervently about Star Wars: The Old Republic, and given you the skinny on under-the-radar titles like Aion, FreeRealms, and Jumpgate Evolution. We've even walked away from our precious fantasy to talk about games like APB or The Agency. The Vault's list is a great one to run down - check it out to see what game you should be obsessing over today!

One Shots: A lesson in snowball war 101

Filed under: Sci-fi, Screenshots, EVE Online, One Shots

Today we have yet another snowball shot taken over the holidays in New Eden. For all the grumbling about lag, it would seem that a lot of EVE Online players had a great time pelting one another with snowballs this year. Of course, it can be a little hard to deal all that snowy ammo flying at you when a bunch of your corpmates gang up on you, as we see in today's One Shots sent in to us by JamesS (not to be confused with our James Egan). He writes in: JamesS here from EVE Online. You wanted a snowball fight - well here's one fight just after we received CCP's gift. EVE University says Hi and Happy New Year!

If you've got any fun screenshots of you and your corpmates messing around (or being deadly serious, for that matter) we'd love to see them. Just snag a quick screenshot and email it to us here at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name and whatever game its from. Corp name and a quick note are welcome, but not required. We'll post them here for all to see and let people know you sent it in. Fly deadly!

City of Heroes Mac client goes gold

Filed under: Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Launches, News items

Noble citizens, we bring you glad tidings from the city of Paragon. For on this day, those who staunchly refuse to give up their beloved Macs for more MMO choice have a new (native) game to play! Word has come down from the folks at NCsoft that the City of Heroes Mac client has gone gold and is available for all you hip caped crusaders to download. No more will you have to mess with flipping over to the evil tyrrany of Windows to get your crime-fighting on! As if that weren't enough to make you jump gleefully into the Mac client, you will also get an exclusive Valkyrie costume set and (here's the good stuff) a mission teleporter that will allow you to port directly to the door of your active mission. Say bye-bye travel time - and be the envy of all your non-Mac CoX playing friends.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, those Very Silly People at NC NorCal have produced a very special video for the Mac fans in the house. Of course, anyone who owns a Mac (or a TV for that matter) has undoubtedly seen a similar video, but it took the City of Heroes & City of Villains developers to put this particular spin on it. Curious? You can check out their new video behind the cut!

Mod Mark, the Lead Designer for Jagex's RuneScape, has written a new Behind the Scenes article for January in which he describes the changes coming down the pipe for RuneScape.

There's mention of a new phoenix combat pet that will have the ability to fire ashes at your enemies. The Achievement Diaries are also releasing this month; this time set in the peaceful Seer's Village and the surrounding areas. As with previous Achievement Diaries, this one was created to show the hidden or non-quest activities in the area. In addition to these large additions, some minor changes will be made to the game. Check out the complete article for more information on all changes that have arrived or will be arriving in the month of January.

Runes of Magic to launch in March

Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Launches, MMO industry, New titles, Free-to-play, Runes of Magic

Runes of Magic, the new free-to-play fantasy MMO from German publisher Frogster, has just announced its official launch for March of this year. The game has enjoyed a productive closed and open beta for several months now, and the news of a launch coming so soon should surprise no one who has been playing throughout that beta.

In fact, make that 300,000 someones playing the beta. The game has received some well-deserved buzz lately, and this launch should be an exciting time for fans waiting anxiously to play "for real." Be sure to keep your eye here for more info on the game as the launch date approaches.

Next EVE Online expansion named Apocrypha, launches March 10

Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions, Game mechanics, Launches, MMO industry, News items

The other day we picked up on a video interview with the CEO of CCP Games, who announced a firm March 10th release date for the next EVE Online expansion -- but until today, that expansion wasn't given a name. CCP Games announced the "Apocrypha" expansion this morning, and a bit of what it'll bring to EVE.

The Apocrypha feature page isn't up yet -- so more details are likely to emerge -- but thus far they've confirmed two new game mechanics will be coming to EVE in March. Wormhole exploration is an upcoming feature that will allow EVE's explorers to discover new technology, used to create the next iteration of ships in New Eden -- Tech III. These modular ship designs will potentially allow for thousands of different configurations of ships to suit different purposes, and are a far cry from the Tech I and Tech II ship hulls currently flown in New Eden. In addition, Apocrypha will bring Epic Mission Arcs. The release states: "These branching, far-reaching mission strings are full of meaningful stories and more intelligent and deadly adversaries."

Warhammer Online's fortress changes begin rolling out

Filed under: Fantasy, Warhammer Online, News items

Players had been experiencing some stability issues playing Warhammer Online's endgame Fortresses -- the bits before the capital cities -- until yesterday, when a new system went into place for the Phoenix Throne, Dark Crag, Vortex, and Darklands servers. This system is going to be rolled out over the coming days onto all of the game servers, which is a plan that smacks of cautiousness on Mythic's part. Or in other words, they're being wise and avoiding server imploding en mass.

So what's the big fix? Well, it's an implementation of a threshold system. What was happening before, is that Fortresses would get so full of players -- 500 or 600 of them -- that the entire thing would essentially crash for everyone. It was a big crash-a-thon. Now, when the player count approaches certain thresholds the game will start teleporting rank 35 and below players entering the fortress area into the nearest warcamp. Then, rank 37 players at the next threshold, before finally rank 39 at a final threshold. Mythic hasn't stated what the exact numbers are for each of these caps, but hopefully it's a high enough count that too many players shouldn't feel frustrated when they attempt to join in the battle and find themselves staring at a vendor or trainer.

This is just the first fix of what Jeff Hickman recently promised as one of many (see video above) that should be coming sometime in the future. And with the rapid-fire rate that past updates have hit the game, we have no reason to believe otherwise.

Champions Online wants your feedback!

Filed under: Super-hero, News items, Champions Online

Everyone has an opinion, especially when it comes to making your own superheroic persona to represent you in things like City of Heroes. Cryptic Studios learned this from their experiences and they're taking player feedback into consideration as they continue their work on Champions Online. That's right, you too can be an armchair developer for Champions!

If you have some ideas for what you'd like to see in Champions, just drop by the Cryptic website, log in, and fill out their feedback form. Really, it's just that simple. No beating up any thugs or avoiding super death rays. Plus, if you're lucky, you might just find some of your suggestions in the game. Sounds like a good deal to us. We've already stuffed the ballot box asking for rocket launchers that fire flaming chainsaws.
