After more than a year of consistent WoW-ing, I've come to my first "burn out" period. I can't put my finger on exactly what it was that made me take an indefinite break; I simply realized I wasn't having fun anymore. Perhaps the feeling will pass after a brief break, or maybe I've dinged my last in the World of Warcraft. Time will tell.

Already stopped playing forever. I played for about two and a half years straight but it's officially taken off the harddrive now. Probably nothing could make me want to go back.

My favorite times in WoW will always be the early game. For the first year me and the friends I made were leveling up our first characters. Discovering Blackrock mountain, Dire Maul and Scholomance for the first time were magical. Those were great times.

But it's what comes after that... getting into a larger guild so you can advance your character more really killed it for many of us. We didn't want to disband our small guild just so we could see more places like Molten Core and Zul Garub. But thats essentially what we needed to do to continue playing.

And what was this new type of content like? Well... pretty boring really. 40 man or even 20 man raids are not like small, more intimate encounters of the early dungeons. They are, like I said, pretty boring.

I was taking a semi-break and I came back to play through the 5 man instances of Burning Crusade. But then it was back to large raids in Kara. This type of play is just not for me. Unfortunetly WoW will always have this type of game play so I don't ever see myself returning. Especially with all the high quality games on the horizon. I'll try my hand at Conan. But I think Warhammer is the one that's going to keep me. It looks the most interesting.

I quit three months after release. It just wasn't my type of game. I think if I remember I just focused on EQ2 after that since if I remember they both came out at the same time.

I think the thing that did it most for me was WoW did not have a bard class.

That and the community. I remember having to turn off general chat because it was filled the most stupid chat I ever heard. Followed by "reported", "reported", "reported".

To those who still play, you have a thicker skin than me I guess, and I was on a PVE WoW server haha.

Ive quit many times, sold my account. Came back, lvld a new batch, then sold my account again. For me WoW is fun when im lvling, but end game sucks! I enjoy twinking, but raiding? Sheesh, I got burned out in mc/bwl way back before tbc.

First of all, let me tell you that I'm a big fan of Warcraft universe and its lore. But well, I've quit (or better: I'm more out than in. Sometimes I reactivate my account for experience some new content). And there's not one reason why I've quit, there are some of them!

1. Too static. You or even your guild can't affect the world. The head of Onyxia or Nefarian is nice to see but that's all. Even games like Ragnarok Online does have the possibility that a guild can hold a castle. Okay, Guild Castle Wars are difficult to build in the Alliance vs Horde scheme but there's no housing as well!

2. High-end content consumes too much time (raid) or is boring (PvP). I have no problem that a raid sometimes needs about 4 or 5 hours but it's not done with one raid, no you have two or more raids per week and that week after week. And WoW's PvP is like a usual Hollywood movie. Interesting and good for the first time. Maybe also for the second time but then it's over.

3. Too less Role-Play features. Nobody says that WoW should be the second Ultima Online but the game has lots of instances but, e.g., still no surname option. Hell, nothing to talk about more complex features.

(4. Arena eSport. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Hm, that's what comes in my mind currently. But before a fanboi flames me to death, let me say that WoW has some positive aspects as well. For example, it's easy to learn and does have a exciting world. The time between level 1 and 60 was one of my best in gaming life.

I quit because i cannot stand the fact that blizzard completly ignores the community and TBC was a sad addition imho compared to the old endgame which was really stacked full of good lore that people who knew alot about Warcraft could really relate to. TBC however was basically a bunch of made up sit other then the Illidan story. Not only that they let the old endgame die. Some of the old dungeons were really good, I miss strat, I really do hell i even miss Scholo and I never got a Chance to have a real Dire Maul run. I never got to see Hakkar go down, or Onyxia or Blackwing. I may have gotten the chance after I got to 70 on some of these bosses but none of it felt special like it did when my guild just barely took down rag for the first time :(

Burnout from raiding had me cancelling a handful of times over the years, yet I kept coming back to the game.

It finally came to a boil here recently and I've uninstalled the game in frustratrion. Spending 30+ hours a week raiding with nothing to show for it is the final straw for me. It's just not enjoyable for me any longer.

That's pretty funny, given that all the lore was made-up by Blizzard.

But to the topic at hand... the endgame is what drove me away. I was unemployed for a while, and during that time 5 & 10 man instances were lots of fun. But once I went back to working full-time, they became difficult to fit into my life.

I never did the larger scale raiding. It just never interested me. I'm a cog in the machine at my real life job. I don't want to be a cog in my entertainment, too. :)

I played a month after release for about 6 months straight. I had a great time; WoW seems to be a game that the more nub you are, the funner it will be for you. After reaching a certain point, everyone I was playing with stopped playing, so I stopped. Then I came back with another friend, spent three months getting to 60 then quit again, right after TBC came out. To this day I still dont have a character to 70, and I think this is primarily due to the people I choose to play with, lol.

I'm with the author on this one, I just get burnt out after playing for so long. Its always a different amount of time, but in every case its been because I stop having fun. If you get home from work and start to reluctantly start up WoW, I'd say its time for you to take a step back.

To anyone looking to give WoW a try, take my advice and avoid hardcore end-game minded people like the plague. If you've never experienced the content before, dont let someone steamroll you through on the way to 70, because endgame sucks. There is an incredible amount of character to be experienced by the older content, and I highly recommend doing it with somebody who hasnt seen it, either. The grind is a lot less terrible now that the xp gain has been increased, but its easy to get into fast-track mode and rush to hit level cap asap. Just take it slow, and enjoy the game around you. And if you do hit cap, I advise you quit. Participating in end-game is almost a sure fire way of ruining the game for you.

Played for 5 months or so and stopped, great game. I mean I'm a bit miffed that I never really raided, but I did do a lot of PvP, and I never do PvP in an MMO, something about it just turns me off. I'm playing LotRO and I haven't done PvMP yet. getting "Ganked" in WoW was kindda fun because you could retaliate fairly easily. I know there were a lot of jerks on our server, but the worse they could do was /spit in your face.

I usually just laughed most of that stuff off. I think it made them even more upset. PvP stuff was top notch in WoW, and I love their art direction.

I doubt I'll ever play again though, maybe if they do a 360 port with the next expansion I'll get into it. Who knows.

City of Heroes will always be a mainstay in my life, until they dismantle the game. I take a month or so break from time to time, but it's so casual that it's really easy to get back in. But for me, the fun comes from making new characters and trying out new build strategies... so I probably won't be completely bored until I've played all the powerset combinations in the game.

I quit about a year after release, and this was after only playing for about 6 months of actual game-time over that year.

The community was what really killed it for me. WoW is so geared towards a certain demographic (we'll call them by the code-name "Juvenile ePeen Fanatics") that I have absolutely no desire to be in the same world-space with. I do respect Blizzard's technical abilities, and I do think that the game world is one of the best out there for original IPs, but no amount of technical wizardry on Blizzard's part could get me to re-up. Ever.

Burning Crusade.

The expansion forever ruined raids & BG PvP.

Umm.. I think you find you're done when you suddenly realise you haven't logged in for 3 months and don't care, reached that stage with FFXI after 5 years towards the end of last year. Been playing WoW since, but much more casually, but just don't feel it's tight enough to keep me going much longer, but sure I'll pay for a few months and then sit back and go hang on, why am I still paying for something I just don't play.

Granted not as bad as Eve where I got bored during the tutorial, never a good sign that you're going to get on with a game..

I've quit WoW 4 times or so, but my interest usually returns within 6 months or so. There's just nothing out there as good.

After the 10-day trial is over.

World of Warcraft just doesn't seem to offer much that other MMORPGs don't, and the time investment is very high.

I play WoW in chunks. Typically I play for 3-4 months, then stop playing for 3-4 months. I've repeated this cycle for a couple of years now and I find it works well. After 3 or 4 months off I get the urge to play again and enjoy myself for a few months before getting bored again.
