Funcom addresses Age of Conan beta concerns
Filed under: Betas, Fantasy, Age of Conan
Age of Conan Product Director Jorgen Tharaldsen spoke with MMORPG.com's Jon Wood, exploring the numerous rumors and issues that have come up surrounding the Open Beta. According to Tharaldsen, the persistent rumor that the Open client is older than the Closed one is not entirely accurate. It sounds like it was a slightly older client than the Closed one, but the problems people are experiencing can be chalked up to ambition more than anything else. According to the Director, the Open launch was delayed a few hours as they added a few last minute fixes to the client. Issues they hadn't anticipated arose, and as a result many players have had very mixed experiences. The article discusses a number of issues surrounding the last week-or-so event: public perceptions, expectations for the game's actual launch, their rationale behind making the game such a graphics-heavy title, and their hopes for game performance by May 20th. It's quite thorough, and well worth a read for anyone who's been tearing our their hair since last weekend.

I don't know..........I have the game pre-ordered, I'm somewhat excited but I just know I will be disappointed at some point. I also don't like the fact that the game went gold several weeks ago and that that client, the cd's in the retail boxes, are going to be old beta builds and NOT what I would consider final code. Then we'll have to download massive patches on or around launch.
The game doesn't really break new ground. Its looks fantastic but few people will be able to run it at max given server lag and other issues.
Its still basically KILL-LOOT-LEVEL.

Doesn't break ground except for the directional and non auto-attack combat, the introduction of collision, the single player RPG quality spoken quests and plotting and the massive scale siege PvP gameplay endgame?

I canceled my 2 pre-orders today.
Reasons why.
1. Small world
2. Every zone is instanced like EQ2/D&DO, so no seamless world. This is probably the biggest reason why I dislike this game. Think of all the city building taking place in instances. I mean in SB owning a city was already a way to show off. Every guild in AoC starts out with a private area on which they can build a city because of this instancing nonsense
3. The click to swing combat system is just as boring as the auto attack system
4. The resource system is incredibly lame. Think of WoW but instead every node is in the same spot (not in a few random locations) and they recharge. Bots are going to rule this game
5. Classes are completely imbalanced
6. AoC tried to borrow WoW's talent system but done so very poorly. They should have stuck to AO's skill system

Sounds like a sour wow-fanboy. But to my point.
If you don't like instanced zoning then come back to gaming in about say 5 years when computers can handle amazing graphics, and seamless worlds. There comes a time when you have to realize sacrifices that have to be made for across the board performance. You do realize you are not the only person on earth playing this game. It seems to me you are looking for negatives only, and not shedding light on the positives.
I have nothing against wow, and your obsession with it, but stay out of real games like AoC.

There's also a difference between zoning and instancing. Age of Conan is NOT an entirely instanced game. It has instanced zones (guild cities and dungeons) and then it has your typical shared zones (the wilderness and, judging by Tortage, the cities). Coming from Everquest, I have no real issue with zoning between areas. If it means I get richer environments and don't have to stare at the exact same monsters or structures all game, I'm for it.
