Mad Patcher provides megaprims
Filed under: Game mechanics, News items, Second Life

Over the course of the weekend, two patches have appeared to allow the creation of megaprims in 1.19 series Second Life viewers (Able Whitman), and 1.20 series viewers (Jacek Antonelli). This all predicates on Linden Lab continuing support for the creation of megaprims.
Nicholaz Beresford apparently has been working on another edition of both his Bleeding Edge and Eye-Candy releases. As a part of the patch-set, an option to create megaprims has been included, as well as increased-height building. Bleeding Edge has reached revision W, while Eye-Candy is at revision F.
Here's what's changed between EC-e and EC-f:
- fixed collision of settings between EyeCandy and BleedingEdge
- fixed a bug in the texture-hiccups patch
- removed the "New IM" tab
- 768/4096m building, teleporting and 100m prims for OpenSim (thanks to Henri Beauchamp for leading the way)
- option (ctrl+alt+s) to specifiy size of newly created prims (rather than just 0.5, 0.5, 0.5) kudos to Able Whitman
- backport of a Linden fix in 1.20.5 (unbind-Textures, not sure what it is good for though)
- VWR-2876 (sound file deletion when quitting) by Squirrel Wood
- VWR-4371 (ambient sound volume) by Aimee Trescothick
- VWR-5308 (performance of Wind sounds) by Gigs Taggart and Aimee Trescothick
- VWR-5366 (color picker drag/drop) by Teardrops Fall
If you're using Beresford's EC-e (Eye-Candy revision E) release, you'll definitely want to get this. If you're looking to create megaprims, the debug setting you want is _Nicholaz.Build_DefaultNewRezzedObjectScale.
Alternatively, if you're still married to the Bleeding Edge releases you'll want to grab BE-w, but you won't find megaprim support there.

EC-f: works like a charm. It will be interesting to see what happens this week as the Lindens find the inventory database flooded with new megaprims - will they try to plug the gap or maybe finally give their blessings?

Putting on my tinfoil hat for a second, by removing the Bozo-filter of having to either have testclient.exe or the knowledge to compile your own client we will now get a pile of people who shouldn't use these big prims using them.
I base this statement on the needs to have camera constraints disabled, draw distances boosted and limit select distance off.
Handling let alone creating such prims requires a little more than newb knowledge, but now newbs have the ability.
As far as what will the Linden's do, well, with the bozo-filter in place they may have just left this but with a free-for-all but every man and his furry they have already said they can trivially clamp the prims.
Could it be that this flood of new prims and the associated problems cause the loss of all megaprims, even Gene Replacements inadequate set.
Taking my tin foil hat off...
The more builders who quickly get these patched clients and start making decent builds, ie: do good with them, the more chance we will have of the Lab leaving this "exploit" in the system.
If the good outweighs the bad and if the groundswell is there to bitch and moan when they try and take it away then we may have a chance.
Being overly optimistic...
This was the plan all along. We are playing the Lab's gameplan perfectly.

even better would be is it started like your first scenario, with people making bad use of it, but then, cause of pressure of good builders LL would add the features required to prevent most of the possible misuses and acidents with M-prims (lol, I wonder this new name will catch Xp

two questions
why the 100 meters limit?
and
how do I start new group IMs? (and since we're in this topic, can I have the gui back to "normal"? I fail to see why people dislike it so much, in most aspects I much ratter the official gui...)

btw, it would be nice if one could create prims already phantom

hmm, great discussion Jay. very true on the high probability of really crappy mega prim stuff getting built. i guess that is the downside of having a platform that allows for a lot of creativity.
i tend to think in terms of it being nice to build a 20m x20m wall or floor with one prim rather than four. but can certianly envison god awful mega malls that would be such an eyesore. but them again, on private estates such things would be somewhat worked out by economic pressures. a mega mall goes on my sim, peeps hate it and leave, i then kick out the mega mall unless profitable.
i have no experience with mainland and imagine that these type builds would be all over the place . . .
