How would you design EverQuest 3?

At the ION '08 conference keynote, John Smedley hinted at another entry in SOE's long-running EverQuest franchise. Since EverQuest's 1999 release, the venerable fantasy game has been seen in such places as game consoles (EQ Online Adventures for the PS2), PDAs (The Pocket EverQuest trilogy for the Pocket PC), Real Time Strategy (Lords of EverQuest for the PC), online collectible card games (Legends of Norrath) and even versions for cell phones (EverQuest: Hero's Call). What could possibly be next for EverQuest?
EverQuest on the PC has already split itself between the original game and its sequel, EverQuest II. Releasing a sequel to a still-viable game was a gutsy move, but it fragmented the player base substantially, to the point where neither game, by itself, can challenge newer games such as Lord of the Rings Online. It's this blogger's opinion that SOE won't make that mistake again -- any EverQuest 3 would not be for the PC. It's not a huge leap of faith to assume that the next version of EQ would run on the PlayStation 3. SOE recently shifted from Sony Pictures to Sony Computer Entertainment America, makers of the PS3 and publishers of its first-party software. Beyond that, when Smedley mentioned to the Seattle Times that the PS3 would be a strong platform for MMOs, he certainly very likely had this game (and others we don't know about) in mind.
SOE has made some mistakes with EverQuest through the years, but has also had some huge successes and innovations. If you were an EQ3 designer, and all you had in front of you was a PS3 and a blank whiteboard, what features would you include to knock the socks off the players? Customizable quests and raids? A Steampunk theme? Faster, twitch-based gameplay? The ability to make your own cities? How would you make EQ a worthy competitor to today's great crop of MMOs?

EverQuest 3 as a console only title is a WTFLOL idea almost certainly doomed to failure. There has never been a successful console-only MMO. EverQuest doesn't have a passionate fanbase; it's a weak IP. Combine the two and it's certain doom.
That said, it's also pretty interesting. So the question is not whether it could be successful, but whether it could be a spectacular failure that everyone remembers fondly, like Planetside.
Throwing the EverQuest universe completely out is a great idea. You need to start fresh, you need ideas that people can get really excited about. One problem that will hurt you forever is the lack of a compelling IP and lore.
Steampunk/magic is a cool notion! Play Arcanum Obscura a few times, see if you can capture that excitement of finding rare schematics and building outlandish contraptions with them that lay your enemies low.
There are a lot of holes you could fill that WoW does not satisfy. WoW has a poor community framework, it doesn't foster socialization, hanging out. Total lack of minigames, cool tricks, gameplay diversity. So build off of the three-level (0-60, 60-70, 70-Endgame) strategy of WoW, but with more social encouragements.
For basic gameplay, I would suggest basically making WoW, but with a Sims-element so that the girls could get into it too. Building and furnishing a house and yard in the Endgame, having friends drop by, kicking back and playing minigames when you're not raiding or PVP'ing...
So far no MMO has managed to capture the appeal of the Sims, let alone combine it with an adventure model such as WoW. Try it!
Just be as fantastic a failure as you can be, making everyone sigh when they remember how great you were.

For a (non-FPS) PS3 MMO to work out you would have to revolutionize the UI to work with the limited console controllers.
Personally I think I would build the game from there. Use the standard MMO model as a reference and see how a simplified interface changes the focus of the game. Iterate on that until you have something thats fun to play.
If SOE publishes an MMO specifically for the PS3, I wouldn't expect any great innovations in the gameplay model itself. They'd want to reduce risk as much as possible by using a proven model. Achievements, built-in-Voip, tie-ins to Home, sure but nothing in the core game itself.

i would use the some of eq2's ideas such as every race may play every class. As-well as the switching sides from evil to good, or good to evil. Also the player vs. player would need to be improved to match that of wow. which that game itself is weak, but people like the pvp. anyhow, The building of guild owned cities and hosing would be nice, from small shacks to massive castles which players could raid. NPCs that could help players, like in guild wars so to speak would be a plus in some ways. But there would be rules for this, Such as less drop rates or exp cost. or paying them. Something that would make players less likely to abuse it. A form where players could give input on new zones or bugs, event ideas or anything of that nature. i have ideas that would save Ever Quest. I know there is alot of people breaking the rules to play the old game on player servers and i even know why, they are better, custom content and all, Lets go back on topic, say using eq1 for a all players share a zone so people have to fight over the spawns, it would be better to use the idea they used in wow with less zoning and when you enter say crush bone, you would have a zone for your party only. So everyone can camp the name or kill for exp without worrying about other groups kill stealing or hogging all the mobs. the area attacks in eq2 is nice where monks can attack more then one mob at a time with a bow staff, that is better then having to switch targets in the heat of the battle to pull a mob off the cleric. fix the pets to match the mobs in the game, EQ1 failed when they revamped the world to change the pets to match it, so all the old players who loved their pet classes hate the game now, since the gear is outdated and the pets cant pull the mob off. I myself no longer play on a live server and wont play until they make a eq3 that is worth the time i place into it, Pets must be worth having, I myself love my pets and I like to customize my own look. Here is a good idea for EQ, let the pet classes name the pets, no one wants to see joebob's warder all the time. As well as it would be nice to see more changes to the pets, such as enchanters pets they should have better pets, i seen player servers with female enc's walking around with male pets, and males with females, that was pretty cool, and necromancers having race related pets as well, iksar have iksar pets, gnomes have gnomes, not every race is going to have human pets. I would like to see black panthers as beastlord pets, it would be nice for them to choose a pet type and color kind of like the black and white games. As in black and white they can choose between an tiger, loin, ape, cow, and i think turtle. I know for a fact that would sell to the fans. It would be easy for the coders to do. and would make the game sell more, i have played since 1999 on and off and i feel that EQ haves what it takes to be the best again. Fixing little things with classes i have seen in player servers where they adjusted the ranger's range attack to they match that of melee of other classes. Rangers are bow users, and a lot of players can not play them well because of the lack of understanding of the class. Which gives my main class, The Ranger a bad name. I think the Ranger should have a starting Bow, or at least a low end quest for one that is fairly easy, they must start with their main weapon, no one likes when the ranger gets his bow for the first time and misses every shot. because his skill is 12 out of 100. Honestly i think the pet issue is pretty big if you make a pet class they should be a pet class, not a pet class with a pet as weak as the Sk pet like in eq 1 now. There should be more events like main cities invaded by NPCs and players can choose sides. These events would drop better items, like some of the events in the past, but these would be more common like once a week there is random attack by some force. I also would like to see some in depth back stories, Maybe have bards tell stories on stage, something to give more life to the world. heres a idea go elderstrolls style make it so its possible to turn into another race, such as werewolf and vampire types, maybe not those races but detailed stuff like that, these races will have all the effects good and bad. Also base the world on what would happen in real life, bars open at night close during the day, people go home and lock their doors. The world is alive, Eq was once known to be the greatest now, if only they could think like their fans. Oh and least but not least more zones like warrens in EQ1, that is one of the greatest zones for its level, nothing like druken dogs and their Japanese weapons and nonstop kills, and trains if you do not know what you are doing. :) Thats my 10 cents
