The Daily Grind: When have you had enough?
Filed under: Opinion, Massively meta, The Daily Grind
Sometimes, we play games well past their expiration date. Long after it's stopped being fun, a particular game continues to get our attention. The reasons for this vary: You want to unlock every Easter egg; you can't afford anything new; you play through as a soothing exercise, trusting in your foreknowledge of every beat of gameplay to relax you enough to fall asleep. However, with an MMO, there are different considerations. Perhaps you're holding out for that patch you're hoping will fix that one annoying bug. Maybe you love your guildmates too much to consider quitting. Whatever the reason you keep playing, there comes a point at which you just can't hold on anymore, and you cancel your subscription. Tired graphics? Abusive chat? Constant griefing? What's caused you to finally quit a game?

Graphics really don't bother me as much as others. I never really invest huge amounts of time in MMO's. I'm that annoying friend who's always 2-3 levels behind you. I play primarily with my RL friends, but often I scoop in the SA goons by making a thread over at somethingawful. In most cases, MMO's are only held up by their social features. If you released WoW as a single player game, you'd just laugh, auto attack and quests that are horrendously boring. What keeps me going is having something to do with my friends. If they go, I go. Visa versa sometimes too.

If I have to give myself a reason to log into a game, I've realized it's time to move on. I've never been one to log into a game just because my guild needed me. This is silly. I play for fun and I already have a job.
This recently happened with me and Age of Conan. I had a really fun guild and several people to group/quest with but seemed as soon as I hit level 62, I instantly didn't want to play anymore. I was the highest Priest and was "sought" after but if I'm not interested, what's the point?

I left WoW just because raiding didn't interest me anymore, and the PvP in the game was already piss-poor and boring. I guess thats really it, I'll quit a game if I dislike it.
Now that being said I've stuck it out for a bit in some games because my friends were in it. I probably stuck in WoW for a good bit longer just because I enjoyed hanging with my guild.

for me that game is WoW and has been WoW over and over again. first it was released next to EQ2 which i had been looking forward to for much longer. So I spent most of my tiem in EQ2, since WoW was down most of the time. and oddly enough i could run EQ2 just fine, but WoW was slow on my system??? (EQ2 was ok with 512 ram... WoW was not. at the time.)
Blizzard extended my account again and again to appologize for the outages. (they did this out of the goodness of thier hearts to ALL subscribers.) To the point I did not pay for WoW from release day until mid january. I let my account end and did not play again until BC came out.
I played my Blood Elf to 20 and lost interest once I got to the old world.
I have played about one week for every 3 months since then...
I keep going back and realize i do not like it.. over and over again.
WoW is a great game... i want to like it, but It just does not hold my interest.
EQ2 and AoC FTW

WoW was driving me nutty, raids 4 days a week for 4 hours and constantly wiping to other people's stupid mistakes or going afk. The 1-70 experiance is amazing first time but the end game is absolute garbage, despite the fact everyone seems to want to rush there ASAP and then loiter for their PvP or raid epics so they can get 20% more stats than the people in blues and auto-win in solo gaming.
I always play a healer or tank and I could not believe that nobody wanted to group outside of an instance or group quest, just abuse my character and dispose of me for their own gains. What a disgusting playstyle that seems to be the 100% norm in Warcraft, in other MMOs people group up for more than just your damn loot, friendship and teamwork!
So I quit and wait for an MMO where people atleast want to group and not demand a tank+healer+raidleader babysitter for only their enjoyment.
