Vanguard offers 5 days free to past subscribers

The Vanguard team has deployed its own (more modest) version of EverQuest's much-publicized Living Legacy campaign. Anyone who used to have a Vanguard account may play for free up through the 31st. SOE is touting performance enhancements and "new code" intended to make the game run more smoothly.
See, when the game first launched, it had performance issues about as bad as (or maybe even worse than) those of Age of Conan's open beta event. The game was virtually unplayable in major cities for all but the most beastly systems. With each major game update, though, SOE has tweaked and optimized the engine to make it run better. Apparently the team now feels that it's reached the point where it can reach out to old players and say, "Hey, we fixed it; come back and try again!

George, that's the point...the game had so many issues from the beginning...but now it is the best game out there. Try it. Especially if you haven't tried it for a while.
Trust me.

The offer is until July 31st. I took advantage of it and found out that if you didn't like the game before the trial...you probably won't like it now. This game is just not a right fit for everyone. I am happy for those that consider Vanguard their home and encourage others to try the game.
Since playing in the closed beta, I have upgraded my computer enough that I could set it on "Highest Quality". Still, the world looked like sterilized plastic to me. The lack of polish still just rips me out of immersion and prevent me from enjoying the game. Examples are zooming 'inside' your face where you can see floating orbs as eyes, the inside of your beard and floating teeth. The starting area NPCs stand like lifeless statues. The UI boxes just look terribly amatuer. Robes 'split' into two planes below the knees when running. First impressions are very important. Since it felt like this is what I could expect from playing further, it was less than an hour before I was uninstalling the game. Sorry Vanguard, you are just not for me.

I didn't really care for the character designs or graphics in the movies and screens I've seen...
But you know, I would try the game if they'd offer a damn trial for people who haven't subscribed yet.

The "trial island" is coming and will be out before the end of the year. Also, if you listen to my show, I have interviewed Silius, the lead designer and some of the other Dev's. There is a lot of information there.
As far as the graphics, I run it on the second to highest settings and get 40 fps..here are my specs: (Basically average)
Win XP
2 gig ram.
160 gig hard drive.
Nvidia 7900 PCI express
Audigy XFI gamer sound card.
It runs beautifully, and looks beautiful. On our site are some screen shots and some character armor shots.
Check it out!

Also, Twarsong, what would your motives be for posting a "bad review" in this thread? I mean, so you don't like it..fine. COuldn't you just let the new players (or returning players) see for themselves? Please don't tell me you are trying to save them from a headache or something.
I just don't get why'd you want to comment like that. I guess you just felt like stinking something up today.

As for my impressions...heaven forbid that this is a place where we can share ideas and viewpoints...

Just to warn you, they added a hidden hitch of sorts--it won't affect most people, but it did affect me. If your account was active at any point within 45 days, before the deal was offered, it doesn't work. Of course, this is documented nowhere on their site...but that doesn't stop SOE. *Rolls eyes*
