Back to the Future: A guide to GW's Hall of Monuments

It really is a fascinating idea, when you think about it. Accomplishments are meant to be displayed; that's the easy part. Creating the HoM as a portal from the GW1 storyline into the GW2 storyline is where it gets good. Also, with the HoM, ArenaNet has solved that problem where the original GW1 characters won't be transferable between games (because of the complete revamp of the game engine), but their historical items will. Kind of like inheriting granny's favorite doily collection, except with swords and axes.
Not only will your achievements be enjoyed by your GW2 characters, but the hall will be continuously updated, meaning you can still play your GW1 characters, gaining new accomplishments and items, and they will show up for your GW2 characters on the same account. While the halls themselves are customized to each individual character on your account, the unlocked items are account-wide for GW2.
Each monument will require a Monument Tapestry before your statues can be on display. You will start with one already in place (Monument of Honor), but the remaining four you will need to obtain through the completion of certain branched quests in the main Against the Destroyers storyline quest.
Now let's take a look around inside the hall. Follow along in the HoM gallery below for a guided tour.

personally I think the monument to heroes should apply to a heroes time spent in explorable areas.. that would be a great way to tell which ones are "a favorite" and earn the right to have their statue displayed.
anywho the hall is a cool idea though... only thing I have in mine are elite sets though. I still say green weapons should have a place in the hall in addition to other weapons like destroyer items and tormented items.

You've got to be kidding. Is ArenaNet writing these posts?!
The Hall of Monuments is a monumental failure!
What you neglected to mention is that the players favorite (or must used) weapons *won't* be displayed in the Monument of Valor unless it's part of one very specific set - the Destroyer Weapons (which were introduced in Eye of the North). Love your Celestrial shield? Forget about it. Covet your Urgoz's Longbow. Nope - not good enough. Fiery or Icy Dragon Swords? LOL. You're comparison with inheriting Granny's doll collection is just wrong. Granny would have kept the dolls that meant something to her - regardless of their value. In the current HoM implementation ONLY a specific set of dolls (chosen by ArenaNet) are displayed (and presumably transferred). The rest - lost in history. Betcha that noise was Granny rolling over in her grave..
The same issue plaques the Monument of Resilience where you can display your armor. Not just ANY armor mind you... only Elite armor. Forget the fact that your current mis-matched outfit (carefully dyed of course) managed to get you through three campaigns (and an expansion) without so much as a scratch. The armor itself is probably legendary in your eyes - something that bore witness to your adventures, something to pass on to the next generation. Nope. Can't do it - not unless it's the goldsink armor because you know.. that takes (Ebay) skills to obtain.
The Monument of Devotion actually works as advertised. You can display your miniature pet collection. The table which the minipets rest is small; it only displays 20 at a time. There's no way to chose which 20 that you want to have displayed (to show off to your friends). The order you dedicated them determines the order they are displayed. ArenaNet does give you an option to cycle through but a *better* option would have been to have a window with checkboxes next to each pet. Choose the ones you want, click Apply - done.
The Monument of Honor is another one that was more fleshed out. It displays statues or (small) tapestry awards for certain 'titles' you earn while playing the game. Even titles that aren't so great (unlucky) have a corresponding statue. No problems here although like the Monument of Devotion it suffers from limited table space (only 5 at a time) and they are displayed in the order you add them. Again, the checkbox window could easily solve this.
The Monument of Fellowship could have been great. How could would it have been to display a statue of your best buds or maybe your guild mates? (You know - the ones that helped grind those titles with you or stayed with you for 4 hours while you ventured into The Deep. Instead - this monument displays your (AI controlled) heroes (because you know.. they're more fun to play than with actual PEOPLE) and animal pets (for rangers). Alesia, Devona, and the rest of the gang totally get the shaft - regardless of how much they helped you in the original campaign. Oh.. almost forgot. Unless you've lavished wealth upon your heroes to outfit them with armor upgrades they won't appear at all. And rangers - it doesn't matter if you love your warthog, lizard, etc.. only SPECIAL animals have an individual statue (Phoneix, Black Moa, Black Widow) Even if your furry companion is your best bud you'll only end up with a generic statue depicting a bear, mountain lion, and wolf. This monument *may* work for some players but for others fails by lack of personalization.
The Hall of Monuments *could* have been a great idea. It's an instanced area where you can take other people to show off you collection and (possibly) skills. It fails because of the limited personalization. Imagine a mother saving her wedding dress for her daughter only to be told that since it's not a certain brand she can't give it to her. Lame. The real purpose was to give people a reason to grind titles (continue playing) for unspecified benefits in the game's sequel.

Jim has a point. While I do like GW, the HoM's somewhat weird. I can live with elite armour and special pets, but the fact that green weapons can't be displayed is indeed rather annoying... and let's be honest about it, there aren't THAT many different weapons in GW.
Now in regard of getting bonuses in GW2, I'm not really sure I want them. IMHO, the bonus items I got at the very beginning of the game, with the "1 Million Edition" of GW Prophecies, took away the whole fun of loot hunting. So unless they find a point of balance between utterly useless merchant-loot and the-best-weapons-ever-forged in GW2, meh, I'd rather start from a scratch.
Other than that, GW FTW!
