Running the numbers on a Halo MMO
Filed under: Sci-fi, Opinion, MMOFPS, Rumors

It all comes down, essentially, to the statement by Microsoft that the next Halo title won't star Master Chief. "Lateral thinking", as RPS puts it, can easily see the possibility of yourself stepping into the 'title' role in an interaction with the franchise. Certainly the groundwork is there - we know that Bungie has some lore tucked away behind the scenes. They know lots about that world we haven't seen in the games yet, and odds are they'd love to get it out somehow. Halo 3, by the same token, has a bunch of MMO-like elements already embedded. Much like Call of Duty 4, your participation in multiplayer matches impacts a persistent 'character'. The site has a few links for you to follow (including one to an interesting Microsoft research paper), and some videos as well.
All of this is just speculation, just the same. What do you think? Are we likely to see a brand new Bungie-helmed MMOFPS sometime in the future?

What would the Prophets of the Covenants say! I'll agree that there are very few other properties that would create such excitement such as a Halo MMO.
Only the future will tell.

A multiplayer game does not an MMO make. I'd like to see the strength of what kind of original stuff they can do with their world first, let's see what they come up with for Halo itself without Master Chief.
I can see how they'd rather go the persistent world route over having to chew out a Halo game every x years though and the way things are, a Halo MMO? Yeah, probably inevitable.

Well MMO's are really fun plus you can have some good times on them. We know for a fact that Bungie isn't done with the Halo universe yet and that the newly independent developer is in on Peter. Microsoft has gone out of its way to refer to Jackson's Halo project as "interactive entertainment" as opposed to a "video game," so this may be an entirely new adventure in the Halo universe. But, having an unlimited amount of Spartans fighting each other is what I would call interactive entertainment, too. Furthermore, what better way is there to introduce the MMO genre to legions of console gamers than to have Halo spearhead the effort? Whether this MMO is part of Peter Jackson's project or is an all-new game, look for the Halo FPS-MMO in the future. Check it out. It sure beats the crap out of YouTube. Gears of War 2 hasn't come out yet but the hype around this years E3 was almost as big as last year's Halo 3. So, is it just hype. I found the the two game trailers side-by-side and lets you watch a vote in http://www.clashorama.com/index.php?id=187. Which will become the King? Which will be the all-time best when it's all said and done? And, if you only had enough cash in your pocket to buy one...give it up...which one do you fire up for a good kill session?
