Cryptic Studios is hiring ... for Star Trek Online!

There's still time left to wonder what the studio will unveil on the morrow, of course. Judging by past comments from Jack Emmert, it's safe to say we'll see something more like a AAA title than the casual game STO might have been. Read on below the cut for the full advertisement, and make sure you let us know what you think about this. Does Cryptic have the chops to make two titles at once - one of them a hot potato licensed game?

Indeed they do have "the chops" not only are the working on CO but they also have an unnamed IP they have had in there hands for some time now and it looks like they are going to do STO as well. They are a smaller studio but they do have good experience and a good production reputation thus far in the industry.
I think the better question is: can they make STO a world that does not posses all the horrid features the WoW community supposedly seems to be imposing on developers these days because 10 million people don't know any better? lets hope so! The evidence of that capacity is actuarially in the CoX work. though their are problems with it it's systems and mechanics were very innovative at the time it was launched.
Please, no more levels, and no more innocuous grinding and lets not have a STO that creates the didactic opposition of "hardcore" and "casual"... can't we all just get along (or at least have a MMORPG that does not position us against each other)

How does casual != AAA? Or vice versa? It isn't as any information on the game is available yet. Personally I've always played CoH casually.
Should be interesting to watch though, completely different type of game. If anything they have the chops for trying it.

I think the definition of "casual" is as open to interpretation as is the word "hardcore". One person's hardcore may be another person’s casual, and vice versa. More and more people who aren't the "hard core gamer" are playing MMO and they are a much larger demographic than the traditional power gamers. Most people have other, more important priorities out in the real world and can't spend hours upon hours playing an MMO. The 15 to 25 year old, single, male power players don’t hold as much sway as they use to. There are other types of players who have come on the scene and are a larger audience to consider. I think regardless of how much time you put into this game what is more important is the quality of the game. Can Cryptic create a game that is as player friendly as WOW but with the skill system of pre-CU SWG and the depth of EVE online and still retain the essence of what Star Trek is? This, to me, is the central question.

I agree with Keltic1701. To that I'll add that I hope the game has come depth to it unlike City of Heros/Villains. Don't get me wrong, they are great games to which I have a subscription too, but it is a game as wide as the ocean but never any deeper than a mudpuddle. 4 years in and we still have no end game content for those that attain the max level of 50. Done right STO could very well be my last MMO. I have literally prayed for this game to come out and I hope that it is created with all the love and attention Star Trek fans have given the series these many years.
