It has happened again. Another MMO with a unique idea is shutting its doors for good. Sadly enough, it's not the first and won't be the last. According to the
official announcement made today in the forums,
Fury has reached their time limit for finding a solution to keep the servers open. Since no solution has been found, the servers and website will be shut down in 48 hours from the time of the announcement. Interestingly enough, they say they've also informed all stores more than a month ago to remove the boxes from their shelves, and plan to refund all purchases made within the last month.
We wish the
Fury developers and everyone at
Auran the best of luck with future products. It's a highly competitive market out there for MMOs, and you did your best.

Personally I'm sorry it ended up this way. I like the fact that they took a risk and tried to do something different in a marketplace crowcded by so many 'safe' everquest clones.
At the end of the day I feel upset that this will now be a sign that 'deviation from the norm' is a bad thing. So we will be force fed more and more slightly improved WoW.
Yes the game was fundamentally flawed, mainly let down by its interface. Once you got over that hurdle beating the tar out of other people in a more or less evenly matched PvP without having to worry too much about griefing or ganking was fun... in short bursts.
What pisses me off the most is that the game is now unplayable, along with Auto Assault (yeah I've got a tendency to try everything) its become a coaster in my collection. I hope one day that someone sets the precedent of releasing the server of a shut down MMO to the open source community. I'm sure that their are licensing issues preventing that in most cases - but its a pipe dream of mine. Who knows maybe it would see a resurgance if open sourced as the community could make their own improvements.

What always upsets me as a programmer is that a game like this shutting down represents a massive waste of art assets. The game looks visually quite good and I'm sure a lot of money was spent developing the game engine and art assets.
A small game development team could reappropriate those assets for use in a completely new game project without risking the kind of cash Auran did. But I guarantee you Auran will just sit on that intellectual property until it's worthless because they spent good money on it. The assets will probably never be used again and it's a damn shame.

I will always support developers that try to do something 'new' however (I too was present at the demise of NcSofts AA) heres to hoping lessons are being learnt regarding a 'last resort' plan if all goes wrong.
Develop games that can be played 'standalone' (ie not online) aswell as online. This way if all else fails the player hasn't totally wasted their money on a product that is no longer playable.
Even a LAN option shouldn't be too hard to implement surely.
One last thing. Games like this need time to develop a fanbase (niche market). Over time, once the "..this isn't as good as 'insert overhyped game title here'.." tongue waggers have dispersed, the community no matter how small will continue to develop as seen in both cases of Auto Assault and Fury. They both had hardcore communities that would have continued to play & grow regardless of initial population size.

wtf!the game started out massive during the beta! it was such a good game, but when the actual game was released they may have made some great improvements but they also went backwards with some things, like blood bath, which was a game mode that allowed every man for themselves to jus rip into 32 otherplayers, but hen they droped it down to 8 players, and the ranking system was sweet, but after the beta, it was pretty screwed up and less players were listed. But all up it was one of the best games i ever played, personally dont undertand how they went soo wrong to lose so many players? Maybe they should have had the beta forever???
