While it's not a particularly difficult procedure, there is a trick to it. It involves a few initial prerequisites such as reaching level 24, and finishing Book 2. Oh yeah, and you need to be a Lore-master. Other than that, it's a series of quests, with a few pets being accessible through reputation. Then once you reach level 45, you'll be able to acquire six additional vanity pets as random rare loot drops.

I wish they'd open this up to other classes. They have no real affect on anything so it seems weird to keep it so insular.
Even if the ones others get are different, it would be a nice thing.
