Second Life Mono-enabled deployment rolling after multiple delays

Filed under: Bugs, Patches, News items, Second Life

You might be wondering, you know after all the hooraw last week, just what precisely happened to SLS1.24, the Mono-enabled deployment of the Second Life server code that was supposed to deploy on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Well, that was 1.24.0, and as you may recall that not long after the pilot deployment the Second Life grid went kind of whack. But that's alright, because 1.24.1 to the rescue! Nobody said quite what was wrong -- heck, maybe they can't -- but 1.24.1 fixed that and it was rolled out to replace 1.24.0 on the pilot simulators.

Now, stop us if you've heard this one before, but while 1.24.1 fixed whatever it was that was wrong with 1.24.0, but was kind of well ... crashy.

Are you a part of the most widely-known collaborative virtual environment or keeping a close eye on it? Massively's Second Life coverage keeps you in the loop.

That didn't lead to the disaster on Sunday. For that, blame a failed drive on one of the grid's utility servers (handling part of the presence system among other things).

Nevertheless, by Tuesday this week (26 August) 1.24.1 was replaced by 1.24.2. That still didn't apparently make the cut, we don't know why.

Enter 1.24.3, the fourth iteration of this troubled update in a dapper suit and classy moustache. That's been rolled out now to one quarter of the main grid simulators as of this-morning. That will burn in for a little under 24 hours, and all things being equal (and when are they ever?) the remainder of the grid will take the 1.24.3 update first thing tomorrow morning (Friday, 29 August).

If something does go wrong with the performance of the updated simulators today, we're probably looking at delays until next Tuesday before things are all sorted out, soonest.

Good luck out there on the grid.
