MMO features that haven't made it into Warhammer Online
Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, Warhammer Online, Opinion

Among the legions of fortunate Warhammer Online fans that have played through beta and the preview weekend is Syp from the Waaagh! blog. He's always entertaining and it's clear he's passionate about Warhammer Online. So when he writes about features in other MMOs that he'd like to see in WAR, you know he's not bashing a game that's not even out of the gate yet. Rather, he's genuinely looking at ways the game could be better.
Syp puts forth his ideal WAR feature set, which includes capturable and trainable pets similar to World of Warcraft's system and the player-created content and sidekicks of City of Heroes. Syp would also like to see WAR include an in-game music player like EVE Online, and other features drawn from Everquest 2 and Lord of the Rings Online. Have a look at the Waaagh! "10 features" post and see if you agree with him on what could make Warhammer Online a better title.

1. WAR doesn't really seem to have a typical 'hunter' class yet. We have the squig herder which uses, well, squigs and we have the White Lion which uses a lion. There really isn't any reason to have this (yet).
2. An apprentice system is a good idea but would have to be done carefully. Since WAR is a very RvR oriented game they'd have to be careful.
3. I don't really see it as needed. Unlike EQ2 the gear in WAR looks good, and allows you to customize it plenty. Plus as the author of the article stated seeing what gear a person has on is a very quick way to tell their class.
4. Why not?
5. Really I don't think it would be done well, and it doesn't fit into the lore or idea of WAR. Really dungeons in WAR should fit with the lore, and most player made dungeons I fear would just be easy farming and grinding areas. It's too much of a hassle and in a game that has little instancing it is near impossible to implement well.
6. Always a nice thing. They do have guild housing already though, not sure if the author knew this or not.
7. Yes, very much a yes.
8. I don't really see a big reason for it, but why not. Although I bet some form of in game music plugin will be made as an addon sooner or later.
9. I guess it's always a decent idea, can't really argue it as long as they make sure it isn't manditory.

#1 - Trainable pets... whatever. The funny thing about WoW pets is that most hunters use the same couple pets it seems out of the hundreds available. Want super custom pets, go play an Asian MMO. You can buy them by the truckloads!
#2 - Taking the sidekick system from City of Heroes would be a good move by any other MMO. Nothing beats transcending the MMO's huge limitation of levels separating friends. Makes balancing tricky...
#3 - Customizable appearances are cool. Sometimes good gear combos look crapy.
#4 - Non combat pets?! Sure, whatever. Bet they willl show up eventually.
#5 - Player created dungeons... lets see how it goes over in CoX first eh? I think that (maybe) I would be cool to see guilds fortify keeps they take or something even close to Conan's keep/city thing. But, I would rather we all focus on the current RvR and PvE content because it rocks so far!
#6 - Player housing does make sense.
#7 - RvR dungeons could be cool!
#8 - In-game MP3.. handy yea.
#9 - Really?!?! A tutorial zone? That is pretty much the entire first area. Perhaps they could animate your mouse and have a voiceover help you move around more. Right now it is assumed that you will know how to walk around using WSAD... sooooo.... I guess if you never played a FPS or a lot of legacy RPG games you might feel lost on how to move and click on glowing items. But then, maybe, just maybe, this game isn't probably the best one if you have never played a computer game even close to this before.

1) We'll need a hunter class first. Maybe some day...
2) Yup, something I would love for WoW to have as well.
3) Gear seems to look good in WAR so hopefully this shouldn't be too necessary. And it looks like you'll have some customization options anyway.
4) We might get it some day, but I don't really think it fits in with the lore or feel of the Warhammer world.
5) Nice idea, but only if Mythic would have the resources to check every instance for suitability. I.e. does it fir within the lore or is it just there for money/farming gear...
6) Why bother? What is the point of player housing anyway?
7) Would be cool, and probably on the way.
8) What's wrong with having WinAmp running in the background? Personally I'd rather have the devs work on getting the classes/cities that were taken out put back in instead of unnecessary fluff like this.
9) Very good idea. As long as it's done better than the piss poor attempt Failcom made with Age of Conan.
10) Why not? I like the idea...

1) There is no class currently this would work with so this one does not apply to this game.
2) This wont work for an RVR game. Keep being sieged? Yea, just call EVERYONE from your whole realm and just sidekick them up for a way bigger army then you should have.
3) This will in no way work with WAR, a PVP game. You must be able to tell in a heartbeat what class someone is. There's a reason why they disable this feature in the LOTRO battleground.
4) Non-combat pets are for girls. That's the truth. So is player housing. Get over it. It's reality and there's no room for that in WAR.
5) Too "out-there" to be a real request. Seriously what game has this? Even the game he mentioned doesn't even have this yet.
6) Again, for girls. If you want to sit in a house and do decorating and color your hair go play Hello Kitty Online.
7) Finally one thing I agree on.
8) Um, is this even that big of an issue?
9) Having a single player tutorial instance would go against EVERYTHING they are trying to do with public quest and open grouping. Just wouldn't be appropriate in this game.
