Buffy the Vampire Slayer MMO announced, Firefly MMO 'delayed'

Filed under: MMO industry, New titles

In an announcement to press today about the keynote address to this year's Virtual Worlds Conference in Los Angeles, the folks at Multiverse have announced a trio of new and interesting projects. One is a Titanic-related project connected to James Cameron, while another is the main connecting 'space' that will link all of Multiverse's worlds - a project called Multiverse Places.

The third is, apparently, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer massively multiplayer game. Multiverse, if you'll recall, is also the company that holds the license to develop an MMO based on the Firefly television show, another Joss Whedon fan favorite. While the Firefly title has now apparently been 'delayed', it sounds as though the Buffy title is already in development. From the announcement: "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A massively multiplayer online game based on the critically-acclaimed Joss Whedon television series. Currently under development at Multiverse, 'Buffy' exemplifies a new era of game design, allowing consumers to play it either as a fully immersive 3D environment or as a Flash-based 2D game."

The full announcement is available below the cut.
Be sure to check out our exclusive interview with Corey Bridges of Multiverse for plenty of details on the project!

Academy Award-winning Producer and Multiverse Advisor, Jon Landau, will announce three groundbreaking virtual world projects during his keynote address at the Virtual Worlds Conference in Los Angeles this morning (Sept. 3). I wanted to make you aware of the news, and see if you'd like to speak with Corey Bridges later today.

During his keynote, Mr. Landau will announce:

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: A massively multiplayer online game based on the critically-acclaimed Joss Whedon television series. Currently under development at Multiverse, "Buffy" exemplifies a new era of game design, allowing consumers to play it either as a fully immersive 3D environment or as a Flash-based 2D game.

2. Places in Time: Titanic: The world's first virtual interactive learning experience based on Academy Award-winning Director, and fellow Multiverse Advisor, James Cameron's original digital footage, computer models, and encyclopedic data. The world will be offered to the global online audience free of charge.

3. Multiverse Places: A highly-realistic, next-gen social virtual world. Both "Buffy" and "Titanic" will initially launch as special zones within Multiverse Places. The world's first open source virtual world, Multiverse Places enables virtual world developers create new, completely unique zones within it using Multiverse's technology. We're also announcing a Facebook application to help introduce consumers to certain aspects of the virtual world and give them an easy path to experience the full-featured "Places."

Silicon Valley-based Multiverse is a leading provider of virtual world development technology. Its customers include indie teams, Fortune 500 organizations, and Hollywood legends that are building games, social and educational worlds, and business collaboration environments.
