Hero Con attendees to be granted future CoX closed beta access
Filed under: Betas, Super-hero, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Events, real-world
Closed betas, a relatively recent addition to City of Heroes issues, are a pretty mysterious business. For a start, nobody knows exactly what the selection procedure is. You can even be picked for closed beta for one Issue and not included next time around. As there's often at least a few weeks between closed and open betas, the closed beta testers get a serious head start on checking out the new awesome. As well as doing some serious focused testing, of course. However, now closed CoX beta access is being offered as an added perk of attending HeroCon. Whether this will include Issue 13: Architect is not certain: 'Given the timing of Hero Con this may include Issue 13 closed beta, but will also include access to the future closed beta of Issue 14!' This is on top of the permanent Carnival of Shadows Harlequin costume power.
For those who can make it to the event, it's a spectacular perk, especially since the benefit appears (so far as we can tell) to be ongoing. Those who can't will have to fall back upon the old-fashioned method of getting into a closed beta: crossing your fingers and hoping really hard. We can predict with total confidence that some players will be unhappy about this; after all, we have just had an epic thread about the relative fairness of giving away permanent costume powers with con attendance.

I'm one of the unhappy players that left over this type of crap. After 3 months off, I was *almost* ready to forgive and forget and play a few more months til Champions Online starts up. Now they've hit my two hot button issues in one fell swoop - in-game perks for RL West coast attendance, and the ridiculous, useless, exclusive Closed-Beta-for issues process.
NCSoft will never get another dime of my money. I hate it for the good people they are laying off.

Speaking of future hero con attendees, my daughter Robin was born on 9/11/2008 ;) Soon enough I'll be building her her own computer and she'll be logging in under the nickname Hero_from_birth yay.

I don't get the people upset. Do they think it's any different for the devs fav "posters"? They always get in. It's about 150 people. That's about .01% of the population. They're going to invite a lot more then that to closed beta.
And it's closed beta on 2 issues. BFD. It's not like they get "exclusive" content. A stupid costume, and a tshirt.
I think "over reaction" is the word I'm looking for. People get so pissed when they can't have what others get. As minimul as it is.

For those who just don't "get" the anger, I refer you to the CoX boards and the thread discussing this topics in the News and Announcements part of the CoX forums. Specifically, I refer you to GadgetDon's well thought out posts.
I no longer have a voice on the CoX forums since I have canceled my account, but GadgetDon has said everything I would say, and less angrily than I could. The only difference is that he has not reached the straw that broke the camel's back, and I have.
I hope he keeps up the good fight, but I voted with my wallet.
And if you still don't "get" it, well I hope you never do. It takes being bitterly disappointed over something you were once passionate about to feel the way I do - and I don't wish that on anyone.

Dude, get over it.
I've been playing since May '04, log in almost daily (unless there's GF agro), and have a full roster of alts on 3 servers (plus several scattered across the rest). Can't call me dispassionate by any stretch.
I've never attended a beta, rarely go on Test, and stopped following the boards a while ago. I just enjoy the game. Sure it sucks that most of these activities are in the West Coast, and in the US to boot (I'm in Canada). But I'd rather see NCSoft save on travel expenses and pour more money into the game.
Relax! Everyone will get the content eventually.

Dude, surely you realize that the "massively" aspect of MMO's implies that such games have many aspects - missions, socializing, crafting, badges, bases, PvP, even movie-making. What may not be important to you may be vitally important to the next "dude."
I had played nonstop since April of '04, and just because I was passionate and then bitterly disappointed does not mean you were DISpassionate because you were not similarly disappointed.
However, you have been deluded if you believe, as they state, that they cannot afford to travel or hand out conventional swag at conventions. They are SELLING closed beta access - it is not a gift, not a reward, and the motive is pure profit. Money from these things are going to the shareholders. The cost of conventional swag - a case of t-shirts - is not going to fund any significant development of the game.
The answer is not to relax and trust these clowns. They aren't trustworthy - they've had plenty of negative feedback on this issue, and not onluy continue down that path, but make it worse!
Things like this erode the player base, and you will see, as the competition begins to hit next spring, that they will reap exactly what they have sown - a player base that will treat them as disposable and interchangeable, just as they treat us.

Johnny,
I found GadgetDon's posts to be kinda rude. When he implied the developers were "giving everyone the middle finger" I stopped caring what he had to say. Whiners suck.

When Jack said that "whiners suck" I thought he was rude and stopped caring what he said....

I just don't see the big deal. Not getting into closed beta does not stop any person from getting the content that has a paid sub. It's just a "little earlier".
Why all the dissappointment? Just b/c it's not avail to you? There's nothing game altering that the antendees are getting. Zero. So, why can't it just be "gratz to them" rather then "pity on me"?
I've played since 8/05. I don't enjoy the game as much as I used to, but I don't think it entitles me to have everything everyone else has. It's like the wedding pack and the GvE pack: you don't HAVE to buy it (go to the event) but if it's important enough to you, there's nothing NCSoft is doing to stop you from having it. It's just kinda redundant.
"I can't afford/don't want/aren't allowed to go, therefore, no one that can should get any special items/privledges". It's very immature and selfish.

As I stated above - if you don't "get" it, I hope you never do.
But you are simply arguing - wishing, really - like so many "pro" posters in the official forum that those of us who are angry would simply feel differently. In other words, if it isn't a big deal to you, then it shouldn't be a big deal to anyone. Well, my friend, life just doesn't work that way. And if you are trying to persuade me that my feelings are not valid, calling me immature and selfish is not the way to do it.
But it is my personal view that NCSoft is choosing to reward people by enriching their in-game experience while purposely excluding scores of others who are or were just as passionate about their game as their pet selected few. I'm sure my view would be different if I were not systematically excluded from this additional content.
BTW, there are considerable advantages to being in closed beta, not the least of which are MARKET advantages - knowing which IO sets (knockback protection anyone?) or salvage values are likely to change due to the changes. People make millions of inf off of this info, and having it early is a very real advantage.
Need another example? Level bumps given in closed beta but not open beta - how does a free level 50 of a new archetype sound? Pretty nice? Yes, well it is a considerable advantage to those that PvP on Test, which is the home of cross-server tournaments.
So do not sing to me that there is no advantage, or that it is a matter of waiting. That is demonstrably untrue.
Of course, you are such a laid back guy, I'm sure those advantages are unimportant in your view, and therefore should be unimportant to me.

What advantages can you get from the market? Everyone knows everything about all the new IOs and what salvg they need when it hits open beta for a month (or 2). so you get what? and extra 4 weeks of staocking up on salvg? If manipulating the market is your only goal, then I can see how this would make someone jelous. But, I still think it's petty, considering how easy inf is to get in the game. Even w/out playing market tycoon.
I don't PvP. So, no it means little to me to test the lvl 50 PvP of a new set. I can see that being a concern, but not to the degree that people are taking it.
Lastly, you name those advantages, but the point is: someone would have them. Regardless if it's the people at hero con, you should have been offended that there is a closed beta at all, b/c there is going to be someone that gets those.

Oh, I am highly offended at closed beta. It serves no tangible purpose for the player base. As you probably realize, closed beta was a fairly recent addition to CoX - the beta period used to be 100% open. Consequently, we can compare the before and after. I've looked, and I can tell you: the beta period are no shorter under the new system; nor are we getting more issues per year in the new system; nor are there fewer bugs per issue on average (they may have been able to claim that early on, but the bugswarm that was Issue 12 blew the average out of the water).
Where the closed beta process gives no benefit, yet closes off Test server for the unwashed masses for a few weeks AND divides us into the haves and have-nots, you are dang straight I oppose that process on general principles, not just this new access issue that cropped up.
I oppose the costume codes for con attendance for the same reason - it serves no benefit for the general player base (if it had a purpose - like drawing in new customers, I MIGHT think differently, but the codes are reserves for active accounts only) AND it divides the player base into haves and have-nots.
Both of these issues, as I said in my initial post, are admittedly hot button issues for me. This is because of the two characteristics they have in common - they are devisive, and pointless.

Thanks for the kind words, Johnny, but we disagree on one thing. I >DO< think there is a benefit to closed beta. The ability to have a limited number of people pounding on it, not those who have been working with it through development so knows how things "ought" to be but some fresh eyes, is very useful--and when you open it to everyone, you tend to get a lot of noise that drowns out the important feedback. I've done some desktop programming, and you need a limited beta before you open it wide.
But as much as sales wants to give this to all the "good customers"...it's not a sales tool. At best, it adds noise to the feedback, at worst, people who aren't fully understanding beta gets turned off that it isn't release-quality. We were a small enough company that I could go over to the sales guys and convince them of this (the baseball bat usually was not required).
I support closed-beta. But guaranteed slots for anything other than "you're the best tester we can get" is not good.
(I also oppose the other convention giveaways so long as there is no other way to get them.)
