The Daily Grind: How important is reserving your name on launch day?
Filed under: Fantasy, Culture, Events, in-game, New titles, Warhammer Online, The Daily Grind
By now, everyone with the Warhammer Online Collector's Edition and Standard Edition have reserved their character names, thanks to the special head-start promotions for each. Let's face it, besides the obvious allure of playing the game a few days early, that opportunity to grab the perfect name is why we pre-order and sign up for these head-starts in the first place. MMO bloggers from all across the blogosphere are discussing how happy they are to get their planned names, if they were lucky enough to get it.
So we want to know how important it is to get that perfectly planned name. Were you able to get that holy grail name you've brought with you through your gaming career? More interestingly, if your name is taken on one server, will you switch servers just for that name?

It really doesn't concern me that all the ghey names like Dritztss (or however the fuck you spell it) Thrall and other common mmo names are taken.
I'd venture to say anyone who's not a big turd has an original name that would rarely, if ever be taken.

Oddly enough though, the first time I joined WoW, about 10 months after it came out, My gamer name had been "DarkAnus" for a long time. I tried to make my Tauren Warrior named that but it said it was taken. Could've just been because of the "Anus" but I still found it humerous.

You call others turds, but name your character Dark Anus? How much paint do you eat on an average day, retard?

It's nice, of course, to get your first pick, but it's never been a big issue for me. I can see how it could for the people who use the same character name in every game, but I've never done that.

Yeah I got my names, but I rolled at 5am to be sure. My names are all original, but I've been around a few decades and just never know for sure. 1 was taken in the beta so I wanted to be sure I didn't lose it permanently :)

Names are definitely important to me. Luckily, I'm good at making up unique names so they are rarely taken. :) I'm not joining WAR, but my WoW Death Knight's name has been reserved for a month now. It took me some time to find a name I was happy with, since I'm so picky. Once I did, I immediately reserved it on my server of choice.

It's not that big of a deal to me, but it is a minor annoyance when I can't get the name I want. I tend to like to carry character names across games as I can, so it's disappointing if they're not available (particularly if I thought the name was rather unique)...

I had two names I used throughout the beta, so I kind of just went ahead and made my two mains on the server I wanted to be on. Didn't think it was a big deal.

Black Orc - Saurfang
Witch Hunter - Quatermain
That is all

I always use one of a set of names, with one being primarily for my main. So yeah, it's a big deal to me. I also tend to chose names that are only four letters long (I hate long names when trying to send tells or invites) so the names I usually choose are far more likely to be taken up. Rrin, Zyar, Lope are my usuals, and I have them all reserved on my WAR server, though, I did break out of the box a little bit and named my main Ezekeil.

Bah, you people and your getting the head-start to work. *grumbles*
That said, not that important or I'd have poked Mythic a few times after they didn't get back to me after my first support request. I tend to change names frequently anyway, so not a massive deal.

You say be creative, but you use Metal Band names?! :P
As for me, I tent to just make stuff up on the fly. I normally keep 1-2 names from previous games and make new ones depending on the game. Names that have stuck with me in the last 5-6 are:
Eonilar
Elrund
Swampfist

I would not be surprised if someday we see Character "Name Squatters" in MMOGs much like we see Domain Name Squatters today.

I reuse older names when appropriate; the character concept as a whole transfers between games.
Durinthal, for example, is fitting for a Dwarf. Typically more of a brawler than anything else, in WAR the name's attached to a Runepriest. Still a lot of fighting going on, and I like the healer more than the tank for Dwarves.
