Vanguard hopes for a second chance
Filed under: Fantasy, News items, Vanguard

When Vanguard launched, hopes were high that the game would be a breath of fresh air in the MMO market. Unfortunately, the game didn't meet the expectations of many gamers, who lamented its unfinished state and subsequently left. Sony Online Entertainment hasn't given up on Vanguard though, and they're now offering an incentive for players to return.
The offer applies to subscribers whose accounts have been inactive for 60 days or more. The reactivation promotion lasts from September 18 to October 18 and entails creating a new character, which allows you to play through the new Isle of Dawn and check out the game's updated content. That is, until hitting level 10. Thereafter, that character can continue on into Telon, but only by re-subscribing to Vanguard. Players moving up to a paid account are given a pair of Gnomish Rocket Boots as a reward, which impart great bursts of speed.

Is this the trial? Only avail for returning players, and the starting zone only? Ok, I remember people saying that 3 days wasn't enough in a TR trial, but 10 levels and 1 zone?

No, SOE put out a "come back to Vanguard" offer to former subscribers. The Isle of Dawn trial is a stand-alone trial available to anyone. Nice, but just like the EQ2 trials, it's limited to 10 levels and a single chunk (zone).

EQ2 trial lets you go anywhere.

When I downloaded that huge EQ2 file 2 months back they'd not let you leave the trial island despite the site seeming to claim otherwise... which kind of sucked. I'm not sure what I was doing wrong.

Years ago EQ2 had a trial island, I don't know about today. It s**ked bad. Then they did that SWG space station thing and it was equally as bad.
I tried the new Vanguard trial Island and its not to shabby. Reason being is geographically, its pretty large so you don't have a confined feeling like their other trials. The Isle of Dawn is pretty large (like all the land masses in VG).
If you just want to see if VG works on your PC these days its a good test run. But I'm a bit bias to VG.
They could not have picked a worse time to launch this however...the same week as WAR launching...crazy. Typical SOE, good idea but badly executed.
