A look at Cultural Armor in Age of Conan
Filed under: Fantasy, Age of Conan, Culture, Crafting, Races
Age of Conan has been (in our view, fairly) criticized for lacking costume diversity. It's not quite Age of Strikingly Similar If Slightly Recolored Leather, but it's close. The huge revamp to the crafting system that was recently announced will do a lot to fix this, adding new crafting recipes for armor sets including the Cultural Armor sets.
We had initially thought that the 'cultures' mentioned would be the three in the game currently - Aquilonian, Cimmerian and Stygian - but a recent feature on the new sets has added Acheronian to the list. It's accompanied by a lengthy piece of background text concerning niello, a substance that does exist in the real world, and will presumably appear in Age of Conan as a crafting material.
The whole piece, however, is clearly a FunCom addition to the work of Robert E Howard, and while it's inevitable that the canon would have to be expanded upon in order to flesh out the game, we can't help but raise an eyebrow at a chronicle by 'Lascivicus' that mentions 'Deathcoils' and 'the Dark Lord'. A bit too black metal, perhaps. And Lascivicus? Come on, Funcom. The Bearded Clam was bad enough, but let's steer cleer of the silly NPC names, eh?

No thanks.... AOC has already officially died... I will never go back to another Failcom game, neither will any of my friends or guild mates...
Failcom... its tooooo late to release stuff that should have been in the game since day one... Its almost 5 months later and you just now releasing it...? Fail... Failcom...

The Longest Journey is still one of my favorite games. Would love for them to put out a sequel.

Crafting also has it pretty bad in that game, every tier you make looks exactly the same; lv40 gear looks like lv50 that looks like lv60, regardless whether it's the cheaper green pieces or the better blue pieces, armor and weapons alike, etc.
Not saying I'll never give AoC a second chance, but we're not there yet; hopefully they'll actually improve things rather than just talk about it, aka push the stuff live.

Massively, I have noticed that you have taken an overly negative view of AoC and it shows in all of your recent articles. Fact of the matter is that this has had problems but the devs are working to improve it.
I enjoyed you blog but your blatant bias is turning me off of your site. Please at least admit your bias.

I agree with JJ actually. That NPC name doesn't sound that ridiculous to me at all. And what fantasy setting/MMO can you name that doesn't have a "dark lord" of sorts? Typical, and nothing new, but so what? I don't see you blasting any of those MMOs (LotRO's 'dark lord' for example). It's like saying Wrath of the Lich King is lame for having Arthas in it...

Where do they say they are going to be un-bias?
The writers have opinions. Go read a newspaper and find some un-bias articles if you can.

some new armor models are always nice, tho if they do not rework some of their terrible game mechanics they will continue to fail! Eyecandy and athmosphere was never AoCs problem - FC's artists are really great! - but that do not change a bit on the boring gameplay!

Opinion is one thing, but bias is another.
It is fairly commonplace for MMO's to deviate from their IP in order to accomodate game mechanics. AoC has done this in other parts of the game.
But this article above takes the efforts of the developers to improve their game and puts it down for deviations from the IP.
I am all for opinions of AoC, even though they may be negative, as long as it is a fair evaluation.
