EVE's Quantum Rise on Steam at reduced price, 21-day trial
Filed under: Sci-fi, EVE Online, Expansions, MMO industry

EVE Online's latest expansion Quantum Rise is here. We've written a fair amount on this expansion thus far, but it's primarily been a multi-staged release that introduces some new features and enhancements to benefit EVE's industry-focused players. We just noticed EVE Online's Quantum Rise pricing on Steam -- it's $9.99, down from Steam's already reduced $14.99; the initial cost when directly dealing with CCP Games is $19.99.
Steam also offers a 21-day trial which trumps the standard 14-day trial you get from CCP Games. Based on these numbers, Steam certainly looks like a good way to go. However, none of us at Massively have ever gotten our MMOs via Steam to date. We're curious, have any of our readers done so, and were the the lower pricing and other perks worth going through Steam in your opinion?

I like Steam but what I don't like is that the steam application as to run everytime I play and it has to remain running while I play. It's not a big thing but I'm a freak about extra applications running while I'm playing games...I hate it. I suspect they can offer it cheaper because you're forced to look at Steam everytime and it gives them the chance to sell you other things.

You both realize that steam only takes up 20K of memory usage, right?

I bought EVE from Steam last year and I highly recommend it. Having to start steam to get into EVE was a bit tedious at first but even though it installs the game to the Steam directory you can create a desktop shortcut directly to the game client and voila no more steam. No need to re install the client. The normal CCP patcher works fine from within the game so you really don't have to bother with Steam if you don't want to.

What payment are this guy talking about? You can download the client for free from the CCP Homepage!

Evary Eve-Expansions is free for every subscriber. You only pay a monthly subscription fee...

Right the download itself and 14-day trial are free, but that first paid month is $19.99 last time I checked. It's $9.99 through Steam, with the normal monthly sub price thereafter.

Updating EvE is always the same, regardless you launch it via classic mode or via Steam: launch it and then it autopatches itself. Steam doesen't do the patching.
Also, the 9.99$ offer runs up to 18 november, then it goes up to the regular 14,99$ (also a great deal I must add)

I have an account made through the non-steam method from 2 years ago, can I download the trial through steam and play that way? would actually *like* going through steam to be able to use its features in-game.

I actually just did this right now. It's great, I wanted an alt account for mining/trading so last week I had signed up with the 14 day trial via the EVE-Online website. so I decided to check out steam. It DOES allow you to upgrade your trial account signed up via anywhere else through steam for 9.99, don't even need to download the client if you don't want to. so hey, save about $5. not bad. really easy process, let me pay for it via paypal too.
