CCP Games aims to extend EVE Online to iPhone and mobile phones

Nathan 'Oveur' Richardsson, Executive Producer for CCP Games, gave a 'state of the game' address last month about EVE Online, and hinted at some of the ways he'd like to see EVE evolve. Namely, how the game might expand by leveraging the EVE API. It looks like CCP is taking the next step in making this happen, from the announcement an EVE player came across -- one that suggests mobile and iPhone applications for EVE Online may be coming. Reykjavik University and MIT maintain cooperation through the MIT Industrial Liaison Program (ILP), which is essentially a way to tap the expertise of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for specific projects. An announcement on the ILP site states that CCP Games is interested in seeing what MIT students can come up with in terms of EVE mobile and iPhone applications that make use of EVE Online's API.
Here's the gist of that announcement:
"CCP is interested in developing Mobile applications which interact with EVE through the EVE API (see http://myeve.eve-online.com/api/doc/). We are eager to hear what ideas MIT students might come up with - here are a few ideas:
- Skill Trainer or Ship Outfitter (see EVEMon http://evemon.battleclinic.com/)
- POS Calculator (see http://www.eve-meep.com/downloads/plugins/pos-fuel-calculator/)
- Route planner (see http://www.battleclinic.com/eve_online/route_finder.php)
- Personal or Corp Wallet or Transactions viewers
- EVE Mail (not possible with the current API)
While such mobile apps (from CCP) are still far from being a reality, it's interesting to note that this is a potential direction that the developers would like to take. In the meantime, a few enterprising players have already written their own iPhone apps, which might be of interest to EVE players who like to keep up with the game while on the go:
iPhone
- Capsuleer -- developed in part by by EVE blogger 'Roc Wieler'.
- EVE Tracker -- which Massively has mentioned in the past.
Mobile (non-iPhone)

Why in the world would they reinvent the wheel when apps like Capsuleer are already so far along and heading in most definitely the right direction?!

As I understand it, it does some of what EVEmon does, only it does it on an iPhone and looks really cool in the process.

well they could do what all good companies do and just buy the capsuleer makers outright.
but on another note.... WHHEEEEEEEEEEE! eve for iphone would make me buy an iphone, i have an ipod touch now but the functionality without the phone is somewhat lacking.

Capsuleer currently has a Character Overview section showing your ISK, SP and currently training skill, with an easy to see visual indicator, as well as date and time, of finish time.
v1.1 is just around the corner with many new features, including a EVE newsreader, and a Skill Browser, as well as an extended Character Overview.
v1.2 already has plans of including many of the mentioned features.

Well, I would imagine that the idea would eventually to allow limited interaction with the game servers themselves. one of the things players have been asking for since EVE launched is the ability to change skill trains when away from your gaming machine. IE: through a web interface or some kind of third party program.
The EVE developers have been resistant to this idea for a whole host of very logical reasons (not the least of which is massive security holes that poorly written apps could cause). But this partnerships shows that they also see the logic in having these types of apps available and may be looking for a secure method of allowing limited live game interaction outside an EVE client.
It's news stories like this that remind me of just how far ahead the EVE developers are when compared to other MMO developers. Even the much-vaunted WOW Devs aren't this forward-thinking. it makes me proud (in a small way) to be a part of such a great game (as a player).
