Know Your LotRO Lore: The Dwarves

In last week's Know Your LotRO Lore, we discussed the Elves and their origins in Tolkien's Middle-earth. This week we're going to continue along in that tradition by covering the Dwarven race, their origins and impact in Tolkien's works and Lord of the Rings Online.
As with the Elves, Tolkien did not invent the Dwarf, but he did popularize and redefine the term, beginning with The Hobbit. The plural "dwarves" was also popularized by Tolkien, as it was more commonly known before that as "dwarfs", which now refers mainly to real people affected by dwarfism. This can get tricky when political correctness comes into play, but as it pertains to this article, we will focus purely on the mythical race. Great article. My LOTRO character is a Dwarf and I'm very proud to play as one. My one complaint about dwarves in lotro is that the Dourhands (wicked dwarves) are waaaay too common. While evil dwarves did exist in M-E, they were rare. However Turbine decided to put them in almost every f-ing zone! Not cool!
Aside from that the game has handled dwarves exceptionally well, which is important; the Dwarfs/Dwarves of Warhammer, WoW and Jackson's movies are just dumbed-down, comic-relief versions of Tolkien's dwarves from the books, so at least Turbine got them right in that sense and made them as they were in the books.
