Is Warhammer's new zone domination system working as intended?
Filed under: Fantasy, Game mechanics, Warhammer Online, Opinion
The 1.2 patch went live for Warhammer Online last week and introduced many new things to the game. Among them was a new open RvR mechanic called the Zone Domination system, which supplements the original zone locking mechanic. In simple terms, the new ZD system allows realms to lock a zone by holding all of the keeps and battlefield objectives for at least two hours. The new mechanic has been live for a full week now and Syncaine of the Hardcore Casual blog reports that it is working as intended. Not only does it speed up the zone locking mechanic, it simplifies things as well. The objective timers allow for realms to more easily coordinate their efforts and make smart choices about where to attack and defend. It also splits up the zergs that dominated the previous system and gives smaller groups more impact in the battle.
A cynical person might say the new ZD system is great but what's the point if city siege is not up to par? Mark Jacobs recently hinted that his new State of the Game announcement will touch upon this very topic. Could this issue be addressed in the 1.3 patch?

WoW fans will pan it as lipstick on a pig, WAR fans will say it is the best thing since sliced bread...the rest of us will continue to be baffled about why it seems impossible for these people to see good in more than one title at a time...

Loved WoW. Loving WAR.
It's true, there ARE some Massively readers who can comprehend that liking ONE thing does not mean hating everything else.
That being said: WAR servers down until 5:00 PM today. That's ALL day after having an all-day patch last week. This is pretty rough for those of us with few opportunities to play.

I love WAR and I don't like WoW. I also enjoy various other MMOs. That being said, you won't see me trolling WoW articles or WoW Insider just because I don't care for the game. It's pretty immature.
You can indeed like something without spewing hatred about everything else. You see the same people doing it over and over again. Post several AoC, WAR, Darkfall, RoM, etc articles in a row and you can predict who will show up to slag them.
I guess people get tied up in their games and it becomes too personal. They need a breath of fresh air.

I can honestly say that I played WAR and loved it for a good two weeks.
Then got bored as hell.....

I have canceled my WAR account, as well as my WoW account, but remain interested in how WAR is going, and would like to try it out again someday...
...but good god, I'm sick of Mark Jacobs. I involuntarily grit my teeth every time I see his pudgy image on my screen, doing his impression of a meth-addicted monkey with a British accent. It's getting so old.

dude, you keep mistaking Paul for Mark.
Paul is the brit. Mark is an old, bald white dude from Boston (I think? maybe NY?)

Yeah, you're right. I meant Barnett, the annoying guy holding the letter up there.
Sorry Mark, you're not the douchebag to which I was referring.

Hehe whats with all the brit hate on massively lately =P Other than crappy boy/girl bands what have they done to us recently?
I play both regularly. I despise the pvp/arena system in wow because it is constantly imbalanced towards just a couple classes (currently deathknight (duh) and paladin) so for my pvp fix I play WaR. I used to keep 2 wow accounts open all the time so its not like im spending any more money, just playing fewer alts.
I have noticed with zone lockdown its ALLOT easier to find a fight, just look for the locked zone and go sneak up to the least populated control point, usually youll find 5 or 6 other allies that had the same idea. Hit that, breaks the lock and pulls the zerg off the other points, where other commando teams can take them too! One single warband took an entire zone from a 3 warband order zerg last night. Was fun!

Zone domination makes it a lot easier to set up zones for city pushes, Order always had trouble when pushing zones on my server. because the destro would just stay out of the zone, but now it forces them to come.
