Bounty Hunter class revealed in second The Old Republic video documentary
Filed under: Sci-fi, New titles, News items, Star Wars: The Old Republic
The second video documentary from BioWare focuses heavily on how Star Wars: The Old Republic is approaching story. While that may sound like retreading old ground -- and a little of it is -- there's actually some very new information held within the video.
The biggest of which is the official acknowledgment of the Bounty Hunter class who, according to BioWare, will have "his own movie trilogy" story told to players in the shape of enormous quest lines. And this is in addition to the game's overall story, which puts the amount of story in this game well over a metric ton.
Additionally, we learn that the so-called peace treaty between the Republic and Sith Empire is really more of an agreement to avoid all out war. Or in other words, players of light and dark side will be facing off against each other in plenty of skirmishes throughout the entire game. The news isn't that surprising, especially considering an MMO's got to have its conflict play -- or PvP play, if you like.
Check out the video after the cut.

The combat system looks like it'll be like the original kotor games which would be horrible for PVP and judging on that basis I'm guessing this will really be a PVE mmorpg.
I'm sure it'll be a great game but as an mmorpg.... I don't think it'll be the mmorpg that I want where it feels like an Online world that players can have an effect on.

The more I watch that video the more think "If everyone is special no one is."
They are trying to make a Mass Effect type game where YOU ARE THE SAVIOR OR DESTROYER OF THE UNIVERSE! YOUR DECISIONS EFFECT THE ENTIRE OUTCOME OF THE GAME! YOU ARE THE MAN!
That concept works AWSOME for single player RPGS......Multiplayer not so much........
On top of this the OMG SO MUCH CONTENT, SO MUCH STORY, SO MUCH AWSOME, hype is starting to sound a teensey bit AoC, WAR, Darkfallish.
And I'm personally of the opinion (I spent 4 very bored hours looking at Wookiepedia while on a long bus trip) that the "Extended" Star Wars universe is a piece of crap.
All in all I'd like LESS promises...... and less mastubation about how great of a setting Star Wars is...

The SW EU is good, the problem is that the good stuff's spread out all over the place, over various eras. I think the New Jedi Order is good overall, but it has yet to have a single appearance in SW video games, aside from a thinly veiled reference in KotOR to the NJO's villainous race(ironically millenia before they actually show up).

"We're trying to add a 4th pillar to the MMO space." That's my laugh for the day, cheers.

They been spouting the 4th Pillar wisdom since the day they announced SWTOR. You're a bit slow if it's only your laugh of the day 6 months after the announcement. :)

Everything they said about immersion and story telling was taken from the book: "How to hype your MMO without giving any specifics".

Obviously since there aren't specifics, its still early in development. So lets not just assume things here.
There's no crime in having a fluff piece of the people involved and their love affair with the Star Wars setting. They want to do that as promotional piece, that's their prerogative. You'd be a fool to judge a game on basis of this video. Why not wait for some specifics along with in-game footage.
Guild Wars has often been described as PvE MMO or an MMO with single player RPG mechanics. It is considered a fairly successful game. So don't assume this game can't be successful, there are plenty of gamers who enjoy this type of game.
Not every MMO has to be a virtual sandbox.

I'm a little disappointed looking at the game from afar. In their FAQs they said the majority of the game can be played solo, but there will be some required grouping for certain parts.
I don't like the sound of that. Why would I want to play a Massive Multiplayer game for a single player experience? The idea of Companions dismays me as well. Why should we need NPC companions in a Massive Multiplayer game? Shouldn't we just group?
I want to play MMOs for a large setting feeling. I want to feel like just another person in the entire story, rather then the center of everything ever. I get a feeling there won't be any major battles of Republic Vs Sith and so on. And that's disappointing because those massive fights are what I look for in my MMOs.
I think SWTOR would have been better off as a singleplayer game. I'm worried Bioware doesn't understand the concept of multiplayer as the game is so centered around individual person play.
This is just outside looking in though. We'll see what it looks like once more information is released.

Sheesh, but you guys are negative. The game is sounding very good to me.
And, Cicadymn, you need to look at Guild Wars a very popular online game that can be played as single-player game, multiplayer game, or various combinations of the same. It work well, has been very successful, and many people love it. The reasons you have for concern are causes for great optimism about this game for me.
If there is one thing I really and truly detest in many of the current crop of MMOs, it is the wasted time you spend building groups or waiting for that "healer" or "tank." NPC pinch-hitters sounds like just the ticket for me.
I also think the story idea sounds very good. WoW is about as generic and shallow storywise as they come. I always thought that WoW ought to build whole, deep rich quest series based on class, instead of forcing each class to basically do all the same quests. Tedium! It sounds to me like Bioware is addressing that issue head on.

So incredible, incredible lame with all the jedis/ siths. That was really what destroyed galaxies..
A few on each server would be enough, if even that.. Instead we will see tons of lightsaber wielding kids who probably havent even seen ep 4, 5 and 6.
