Curt Schilling gives up strike outs, hoping for MMO home run

If Curt Schilling has the same kind of career as an MMO developer as he had as a pitcher, rival developers will be hard-pressed to keep up with his new company, 38 Studios. Three World Series championships. The best post-season record in baseball history (11-2). A bloody sock in the Hall of Fame. Schilling performed best in clutch situations, which will serve him well in an increasingly competitive MMO market.

His retirement from Major League Baseball was announced on his blog, 38 Pitches, and it has drawn an enormous response from both the sports and computer gaming crowds. Baseball fans are sharing stories about his pitching accomplishments and debating whether or not he will make it into the Hall of Fame. MMO fans are excited that he will now be able to devote more time to his upcoming MMO, codenamed Copernicus.

I remember being glued to the TV during the 1993 World Series as the Toronto Blue Jays defended their title against the Philadelphia Phillies. Schilling's amazing performance in game 5 gave his team life and forced a game 6. Game 6 ended with one of baseball's most memorable moments: Joe Carter's walk-off home run to win the series. Things may not have gone his team's way that season, but his pitching was instrumental to the Red Sox finally breaking the Curse of the Bambino, over a decade later.
