Warhammer 40K MMO gets a release date
Filed under: Fantasy, Sci-fi, New titles, News items, Warhammer 40k

We haven't heard much from Vigil Games since May 2008 about this title, but what we know sounds promising so far. The MMO's creative director is none other than comic book artist extraordinaire, Joe Madureira (side bar: my favorite artist of all time). Vigil hopes to stay as true to the tabletop experience as they can while still remaining an MMORPG. Finally, the world's primary weapons will be guns and vehicles may play a large part in combat.
While many fans of the Games Workshop miniatures game have found a familiar home in Warhammer Online, many others have complained that Mythic's incarnation of the Warhammer setting is not harsh, gritty, or dark enough. It will be interesting to see if WH40k can capture this or if Vigil will opt for a less mature environment (and rating).

I can wait patiently. I'm far more interested in a 40K MMO -- I liked WAR, but after almost a decade of exclusively fantasy-based games, it kind of feels "been there, done that."

I felt WAR was a better game then WoW...Unfortunately there's no Mac version cause my PC sucks balls. lol
Course I think LotRO is a better game then both of them.
But a 40k MMO would be cool. Maybe if it was more like Tabula Rasa....But with content. lol

WAR better than WoW -- I enjoyed WoW more, but I think that, by the time WAR came out, I felt like I had already played it. That's my own perspective, of course - WAR's a nifty game. I just didn't want to stick with it.
LoTRO topping both -- I wholeheartedly agree. No need for qualifiers. :)
Hoping 40K will be like Tabula Rasa with content -- That would be cavity-causingly sweet.

I agree, when I originally heard of the Warhammer Online MMO I was hoping and praying for it to be 40k. While Warhammer Online is awesome and I still play it I am fucking ready to move on from fantasy middle-earth medieval renaissance bullshit. I love the setting to death but I am ready to move on. I wish Mythic would have made 40k and I'm a bit weary of this developer.
Also Smith & Tinker we need a Shadowrun MMO NOW!

If it was dark and gritty and properly reflected the source material I would be very, very interested in this indeed. Good luck to them.

After reading the post I had planned on mocking the poster for their choice of their "favorite artist of all time" and was ready to spout off comic-artist names like Neil Adams, John Byrne and Michael Golden but after Image-Googling some Joe Madureira art I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed.
Nice one!

40k will be cool, I hope they dont limit it to just the base races though. I think being a Hive Tyrant would be kick ass =P Id call myself "Lobstersaur"!

Woo hoo! So excited for this! Really looking forward to finding out more about it.
Now, an MMO based on Sins of the Solar Empire, and I'm set!

*bu-wha?* I thought that the go-ahead on 40K Online was conditioned on WAR actually making money? Not that I wouldn't love to see it (assuming that it's not going to get stabbed in the back 4 months after release the way that EA did to WAR), I just assumed that at the rate WAR is contracting, the 40K MMO had gone the way of all flesh.

Why would it? WAR is Mythic and EA. Warhammer 40K License is THQ.
