The New York Times reviews Free Realms
Filed under: Reviews, News items, Free-to-play, Free Realms
These realms may not be completely free, but darn if the New York Times loves them anyhow. It's a little strange to see a major publication like the NY Times reviewing Free Realms, let alone any review for an MMO from any outlet. Still, the fact that SOE's little free-to-play game-that-could smacked down the one million accounts mark in record time probably has a little to do with this much attention.
As far as reviews go, this one is highly positive and praising of both Free Realms and SOE, and its not very surprising at this point. Just about everyone has had nothing but good things to say about the title -- not that any game is without its faults, especially at launch.
The message the NY Times' review ends with is one we agree upon. Free Realms is definitely a triumph for the company that lost much of its EverQuest thunder to Blizzard's World of Warcraft. And really, there's no greater proof than having everyone talking about the game. Well that one million account record is also good proof, we suppose.

If history has proven anything, it's that if anyone can ruin a good thing they have going, it's John Smedley and SOE. I really want to be wrong, because god knows we really could use more competition in the MMO market (even if FR's not technically an MMO).
But I just can't shake the feeling that they'll eventually get over greedy, announce some new "fun and exciting" feature everyone needs to pay for, and wind up ruining their good thing. It's sadly the one thing they've become good at.

i'm confused, how is it 'not technically an MMO'? I have not played it but from what i have read...
it requires internet connection = Online
it allows multiple people to play together at the same time = Multiplayer
it supports large numbers of players in a virtual environment = Massively
what am i missing? are you thinking perhaps that MMORPG = MMO? Because where does that leave MMORTS? MMOFPS? MMOP(uzzle)? MMOetc...

Maybe you can take some of the cash your getting from that game and support your prior projects like Planetside. You know, that game that people still pay for in hopes of getting support?
Kudos to you for now. I'm sure you'll find a way to impose some "enhancements" that will ruin the game experience like other SOE games.

Hey, the pulled Vanguard's ass out of the fire, and they've done alright by EQII so far. Go SOE!

I think what you're doing here is commonly referred to as 'projection'. In which case, you might need some psychological counseling...or chemical castration.

@Fess I'm not the one playing Free Realms. I think the Missouri police would agree with me that FR users are the threat, they think there is no reason for an adult to own animal crossing. I would hate to see how much they would liketo lock you sickos up. I make exceptions for those who want to play with their kids of course and kids themselves. Free Realms is a very nice and polished game for kids. However i do despise the FREE tactics they are using to lure kids in and then nag their parents for extras in games.
I was starting this off as a joke with the pedisate but with the replies i got....
