The Daily Grind: Do you think EverQuest 3 will be announced at E3?
Filed under: Fantasy, EverQuest, EverQuest II, Expansions, New titles, Everquest Online Adventures, The Daily Grind

It's June once more and E3 is again upon us. Several members of the Massively team have jetted off to cover the event and there's bound to be some fantastic announcement and this also includes MMOs. For the last couple of weeks the interweb has been abuzz with speculation that SOE might actually get around to announcing EverQuest 3.
This is something we've talked about before and if you're going to announce any big new game, E3 is one of the biggest events to do it at. So, constant readers, what do you think? Is now the right time to expand Norrath? Do you think EQ3 will remain on PC or include other platforms like the PS3, a la Free Realms? Would you rather just stick with EQ2 for the time being or are you eager to see another incarnation of this classic franchise?

EQ3 would be awesome, but only if they started changing up the mechanics a little bit.. graphically EQ2 was superb.

Wow never thought about that, but if it did it would be some serious news for the week.
If they do, lets hope they don't stick with the whole 2nd gen graphics that we must buy a new rig just to look at it..

I suppose it would be a good idea from the business end. EQ2 and EQ have a relatively stable player base, but the current EQ games don't appear to have a growing player base. EQ3 could be a very real possibility, but it needs to do something innovative for it to be a success. The story-telling of LOTRO with the combat of Age of Conan?

Only if it took a shot back towards the 1st EQ. Take a lot more of the classes from that era and bring them back in.
Game-play wise...EQ was awesome and in my book still is. For today's MMO standards they are lacking due to the fact it takes forever to level and you really need a group to succeed.
If you take from the WoW model though, you can "dumb" down the graphics (of even Lotro) to make a good looking MMO without trying to hard to make it "real"
Spice up the questing and what each quest requires (no more kill 10 rats) and you could have a start at a great MMO.
I tried EQ2 but even starting out it lacked something...but who knows....

I don't think the Everquest name holds any power anymore, people just think it's a geeks game.
I think the best thing to do is make an Everquest browser based game like Quake Live or something and make it F2P with RMT.

If they do it will be met with a golf clap and a lot of not caring.

To those who say EQ holds no water.. You obviously didn't spend 5+ years in the original Norrath. If they unbreak Necro's from EQ2, EQ3 could be a beast IMO. But I doubt Sony is going to be announcing any of this at this time. I'd be all about it though the original EQ sucked up a serious amount of my time. And in the current MMO environment I would jump at the chance. =]

Everquest has, to me, always been the most bland and generic of fantasy worlds. I think they would have a better chance at commerial success with an entirely new IP.

Um.. they already released EQ3.
It's called Vanguard.
"Everquest" is no longer relevant, and the name no longer has value.
Who would they market it to? People who already play Everquest/Vanguard? Seems like a lot of money/energy for no real benefit.

Needs to be the ultimate hardcore/raiding game ever to win imo.

They won't, I'm sure, they've been doing a lot with other games and I'd be very surprised to hear of another EQ, especially when EQ2 is still fairly relevant (or could be, if this weren't Sony).
I would like to see them ditch EQ2 and return to EQ, merging EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard to make an updated EQ MMO instead of this time-shifting "sequel" nonsense. Being SOE, I would expect them to totally ruin EQ in brand new ways with an EQ3.

I wish they did do that, The true is that EQ2 is just to much dated for me unlike WoW the game does take way to many mouse clicks.... to get a quest I got to click on a npc click "Hail" click true several text before they finally give me there quest... Later if I wana loot something I got to click on the body and click loot and only have some secs to do it. Also way to much class skills... And that is only some of the examples... Also I really not like the tiny zones and loading screens every time you pass from one zone in the other...
Why games not can just do what World of Warcraft does for years and make the zone load hidden and connect the world! In Everquest 2!

I don't think they'd call it EverQuest III but I can really see another EQ game in the future. Seeing the way the lore in EQ is going, I could imagine "EQ3" being a bit more sci-fi. Like WAR 40k except not low fantasy and less dakka.

I'd like to say that I think it'd be a terrible idea and wouldn't support it, but I know that I'd end up drinking the SOE kool-aid again.
I've bought into so many EQ expansions, sequels, and even Vanguard in a futile attempt to recapture that feeling I had just under a decade ago playing the old-school EverQuest.

I believe the Swords and Sorcery P2P MMOG market has matured and SOE is more interested in new genres and business models. I loved EQ1, EQ2 and Vanguard and, of the three, feel that Vanguard (if SOE would give it some attention) could be the paragon of Swords and Sorcery P2P MMOGs -- so why would they create a completely new game?
In other words, I strongly doubt there will be an EQ3.

I would like to see EQ3. Is it relevant or needed? I am not sure... EQ1 and EQ2 still hold pretty different play styles. Similiar, but different enough.... anyone play a healer in EQ2? Hots and shields all the way... pretty unique heal system almost no good instant heals... anyways.
I would like and EQ3 only because games like WoW with it's easy access and WAR with it's addictive PVP have really changed my view and unfortunatly WoW is not copying WAR fast enough so I would like to see something that has the best of All worlds...
Come on Sony.. WoW copied the living daylights out of you. do the same take the best of the best and combine it all into EQ3.

Maybe something SciFi, but not another fantasy game.

Well if they're going to announce it, then 'EQ3 at E3' makes a catchy tag line. Personaly, I can't wait! EQ/2 reigns supreme in my book.

If they make an EQ3 I will at the very least give it a try, hoping they change the mechanics of the first 2 games to be more solo friendly(i.e. WoW and LOTRO) but with the great graphics and music of EQ2 and the sheer class amount from the first 2 installments. Also, SOE needs to hire some great writers and for once place a STORY in the EQ universe that unfolds as you progress in the game, much like FFXI or LOTRO. That could be the key to EQ becoming a huge name again.
