E3 2009: Final Fantasy 14 MMO coming exclusively to PS3
Filed under: Fantasy, Events, real-world, MMO industry, New titles, News items, Consoles

For a first look (in case you happened to miss the show) enjoy a pile of pictures from the front line of today's announcement!
[Edited to note]: Since there has been some confusion, FFXIV is exclusive to PS3 in terms of console gaming only. FFXIV will be available for PC as well, although system requirements aren't being given at this time.

As long as its 3x better than FFXI, this is good news.

If the tagline is: "Better than FFXI!" consider me interested.
If the moogles are a playable race consider me sold: lifetime subscription pls.

Even 1.1x better and it is sold to me. Favorite MMO of all time and I have played them ALL.

Actually, I think most people misinterpreted. It's not a PS3 exclusive, but PS3 and PC. They clearly said that PS3 is the only CONSOLE that will have FFXIV. It will be on the PC too.

Well I hope this is true (sounds very plausible). I enjoyed playing FFXI on my PC and my PS2 but if I had the choice I would pick PC over PS3. I just wish with the announcement of FFXIII on Xbox 360 they would have added FFXIV to 360 also(And maybe they will because they did only say PS3 console exclusive AT LAUNCH).

Heh, for a minute there I freaked out. Good that it's coming to PC, too. Hopefully they vastly improve on FFXI, as the EQ model is incredibly rusty and decrepit. It looks like a direct sequel to XI, though, based on the images. Same art style at least.

Woot! This is what I've been waiting for! FFXI was my first true mmorpg love, now for its heir to take me to a new world(or same one judging by the pics...hard to tell, either way doesn't matter).

Was that a Galka in the trailer?
Where are the Tarus and Mithras? ;_;
Glad I didn't reactivate my FFXI account, altho I'll miss my 75 Dragoon. Chance to make another one I guess!

I will eat my hat if this does not end on on PS3, PC, and 360. Or at least PS3 and PC. But Squenix realised that FFXIII as a PS3 exclusive was a bad move, I think they'll realise the same is true for FFXIV.
Also, Krisn, it was indeed a Galka, a female Elvaan, and a male Hume.

They didn't realize it was a bad move. They have been paid handsomely to port it to the 360 as well.
OrganiClockwork said on 4:33PM 6-02-2009
Perhaps so, but I mean, come on, PS3 is statistically the lowest-selling console (Having sold 21.3 million consoles, compared to the 360's 30.2 million and the Wii's 50.39 million). MMORPGs are kind of a niche market - albeit a quickly growing one - as it is. Putting an MMORPG out on the PS3 only would be a very poor financial move. I'm not saying it's going to go to the 360 by any means, but I'm saying it would be an AWFUL move to not put it out on the PC at the very least.

As a previous comment pointed out, it is only console exclusive to PS3 at launch which to me says two things. It will be on the PC at launch and will most likely come out on the Xbox 360 eventually just like FFXI did (hopefully not so delayed as FFXI though).

It is hard enough to get people to switch from an MMO to the sequel. Everquest 2 never really got the support Everquest did. If they were going to be given the option to start over, they explored their other options, which helped WoWs popularity.
Now, telling people to switch to a new MMO while also telling them that they have to support the most expensive console on the market? They are killing this title before it even launches - and they are also killing FFXI in the process.
The language used during the announcement is key I think. They said it would be "launching only on the PS3". To me that sounds like a timed exclusive. Which makes sense since like I said above, they would be killing both games otherwise.
OrganiClockwork said on 10:14PM 6-02-2009
Yeah, I suppose that makes sense. Still, it's frustrating that I'm going to have to wait to get it on PC. XD
Steven said on 4:17PM 6-02-2009
I am very much looking forward to this game as FFXI was my favorite MMO of all time! Sucks I will have to purchase a PS3 to get this MMO when it launches. :(
As far as exclusive to the PS3 it sounded like it was not to be fully exclusive but PS3 exclusive at launch. I could be wrong though as E3 is unfortunately not my main focus today and only on the TV behind me as I work.
