Future Vanguard update to fix the players' choice of bugs
Filed under: Fantasy, Bugs, Patches, Vanguard
An upcoming patch to Vanguard has been designated as the "Player's Choice" update, and recently the players decided that it should be focused on bug-squashing. The next phase of this process is now underway, and players can submit their choice of which bugs to fix at this thread. There are a few guidelines for people planning to put in their two cents, the most important being that each person can only submit one bug, and they should do their best to avoid repeating previously suggested ones.
The thread will be open for two weeks, and after that time, a poll will be created for forum-goers to vote on Vanguard's worst bugs so that they can be targeted with priority. When one player asked why the devs wouldn't simply work off the bugs submitted by players with the "/bug" command, Salim "Silius" Grant replied, "This way we are hoping to get the most high profile bugs that the players want fixed right away. Digging through /bug does not tell us just how important or how many people are seeing this problem." If the whole thing goes to plan, a bunch of really irritating bugs should be eradicated when the update rolls out.

So much for the bug report tool, I take it the developers do not play there own game... or they known what bugs to fix..... ALL!!!

Having worked on some really famous products (not games mind you) you might be shocked that engineers don't know every single feature of any one program or game - its mostly because they are hired to do one component of the program and that is it, and some programs are split into literally hundreds of different parts that have their own teams of engineers.
That said - you may also be surprised to learn all products have thousands of bugs and they always will have them. At my last job engineering relied on support (which I was in charge of) to prioritize bugs for them - because they really did not know for the above reasons, and if they do play the game or use the program - chances are it works for what they want it to do and thus there are no real breaking bugs.
So yeah this is an absolutely brilliant idea!

Vanguard has sooo many bugs, mostly small but still annoying, and their team resources are so limited that they have to triage defect repairs. There is no way they can repair -- let alone identify -- all of them. Triaging based on player-influenced priority is a reasonable method to avoid wasting resources on repairing defects that few people care or even know about.
A shame, really, because Vanguard has so much potential but it is highly unlikely that it will ever be realized. Server populations appear to be growing slowly -- without any apparent marketing support from SOE -- but I believe that SOE management has already written off Vanguard as a "loss" and it will eventually be shut down to re-redistribute the resources (people and hardware) to newer or more profitable projects; just like what happened to Matrix On-Line.

Almost 3 years after launch and this is the most exciting announcement SOE could come up with for this game during the E3 week???
Yay?

I've been playing a free month vet reward thing, enjoying it alot. I really wish $oE would actually support this game like it deserves.

Show some sense of history at least. Sigil ran out of money and released the game unfinished. The vast array of bugs quickly caused a loss of customers. You wouldn't even be playing it at all is SOE didn't buy it.

Anyone else thing a massive bug squash should have come 3 months in, not 3 years?

I heard Vanguard had improved massively and decided to give it a shot. But the first impression its free trial gives now is still so poor that it's hard to imagine many people converting the trial into a subscription.
First impression is 100% that it is a mediocre clone which offers nothing that WoW, EQ2 and LOTRO don't all do a much better job of.

Not having to hit /flush every 3 minutes would be the best fix. I have a decent rig and this just drove me nuts. It is why I quit Vanguard a few months ago. Played for maybe 3 months and just couldn't deal with it.
Great game otherwise though.

this is just pathetic how long this game has been in, more or less development.
