Threat of Peace issue 8 could be dropping hints
Filed under: Lore, New titles, News items, Star Wars: The Old Republic
Star Wars: The Old Republic's free online comic, Threat of Peace, has reached issue number eight and finally introduced one of those lovable droids. It's safe to say that so far throughout this storyline, many of the prominent characters and their prospective races featured in this comic have the potential to be in-game racial options. Humans, Twi'leks and Wookiees have all been popular thus far, and now it looks like droids may in fact be a possibility. It's positively delightful!
Of course, races that have seen the limelight in Threat of Peace aren't the only signs of things to come. Bounty Hunters and Troopers both received notable attention. Whether or not this sets any kind of reasonable precedent is something we'll leave up to you, however.

I highly doubt droids will be playable, though no doubt they will be companions. Check the droid companion out in the new trailer.

I think its quite possible that we may be seeing a droid as a playable race. Remeber that Edge article leak about a week ago with all of the characters on the front page? Notice that all the characters shown on the two pages are known player classes in game, except for one. On page one in the upper left hand corner it shows a big green Droid standing there next to the Troopers and BH.
I also think they may be hinting at a new profession, spy. That is what apparently the droid was doing when confronted by the Jedi and was undetected during the first part of the conversation.
Of course in the new cinematic there is a Twi'lek with dual pistols that enters the Jedi temple with the Sith with no real explanation of who she was.

What if there was a class where you were a droid maker of some sort and used droids as a pet.
PET CLASS!?

To me, droids would be the ultimate (and so far lacking) tank class. Droids in Star Wars make Data from Star Trek look like a primitive toaster. They are very much individuals, they just (as far as I know) aren't part of the Force like all other living things.

I always thought they'd put a droid class in the game. One problem would be the character's history though..

that, and constantly being shot with a stun gun to be fitted with a restraining bolt to be re-sold at a droid shop in anchorhead. droids didn't really ever "live" their own "lives" in star wars with so far only two exceptions. they always had a master, and if they didn't they were waiting to be sold to a master, or re-claimed by a pack of jawa's. the two exception's so far are G0-T0, and the assassination droid revan "fixed".
could it be possible that there is a population of self-sufficient droids in the star wars universe? yes. is it likely that the republic, jedi, or sith will let a droid climb the ranks of their organization? no. while they all make extensive use of droids. i doubt they would put any real power in the hands of one other than being sent on assassination missions, moving data from one place to another, or running kolto tanks. so your chances of playing as a droid are slim
that is unless bioware decides to put in a so far un-heard of third "neutral" faction made up entirely of droids. which i wouldn't put to far past them since a lot of people might not want to take sides in the war, but still participate in it. i mean it is a cold war still. both sides would be in need of "individuals" who's moral compass not only doesn't swing to either side, but is absent all together. droids would fit into that role perfectly.

Every class is a "pet" class in that you can have companion(s).
I don't have anything vested in droids being a playable "race", but it would be surprising. I don't see how a droid can become a hero of the galaxy in the same way that other races can unless they establish a specific race of sentient, self-replicating droids. Wasn't there such a race in Ep. 2?

I don't see why droids couldn't be a possible playable race. They had droid characters in both KOTOR games. Wouldn't it be great getting to play as an HK unit?

The hype! the comic :)
Really Bioware does not need this hype they all ready make tons of single player games and 2 of there hits still are seen by some like the best star wars games ever.... I am pretty sure that this game will be nr2 mmo or even nr1 mmo in the world that is when they make a good job on it if they release just single player with hops like guild wars this will end badly...

I know this might be a stupid question, but what is the difference between
Star Wars Galaxies and the new Star Wars: The Old Republic?

the universe is the same, and that's about it, everything else including gameplay, storyline, characterisation and (given it's bioware) quality will be very different. Think more KOTR storytelling, less running around on empty worlds with constant annoying gameplay changes.
