The combat is horrible unfortunately. The graphics are mediocre and yet people running high end systems still experience lag. I really only enjoyed two things about the game: it's post-apocalyptic, and you can make your character look pretty badass.

First, you can see on their forums how this big open test is under their NDA. So you are not supposed to talk about it in detail.

I'll respect that, although when you at open stress testing, I think the cat is out of the bag.

Even if this game came out 4 years ago, I would still not buy it knowing what I know now. No offense to the developers, but these days you need to either make MMOs have lots of polish to get away with mediocre game play or you better have the best, most awesome, game play experience to make up for funky feeling graphics. This is a blanket statement to all MMO developers.

I think WAR is a good example of a game with nice graphics and good theories of game play, but the actual in-game experience is lacking enough to loose retention. And WAR is WAYYYY better than the slew of Betas that are hitting the streets lately. I don't know how these companies plan on surviving.

You know, I love ambitious features. WAR has some great ones... but WAR is a good example of how when your features are just slightly lacking it affects the play experience in a big way. Just take Public Quests... the world has tons of them and a lot of them are fun and challenging - yet then why are they almost all empty? Why is WAR's keep taking more of a PvE affair instead of the RvR it should be? The answers are often small simple things that got missed in the ambition.

So with that, I'll pass on Fallen Earth. Same with Darkfall - cool ideas with far too much in the small details missed. Probably skip Aion too, although the quality of graphics might get me to try it briefly - but another grind WoW clone is going to bore the crap out of me.

Brian, I'm not following you at all. Just because a game has ambitious features doesn't mean they are poorly implemented. I wouldn't compare this game to WAR in any way. It gives people the wrong idea about Fallen Earth. The two games couldn't be more different. I would consider WAR to be like-WoW, but with a twist. Fallen Earth is all together different and unique.

Most of Fallen Earth's ambitious features are very well done. WAR's PQ's were a big waste of effort and no one uses them. Every single one of Fallen Earth's ambitious features are integral to the gameplay and used by everyone. These features give the game a feel that is different from anything else out there right now.

Its probably not going to be a hugely popular game, but I think the game is unique enough to have a solid niche of players that won't vaporize the minute another PvP game comes out. It has a heluva lot more staying power than the mainstream linear hand-holding auto-attack games that are desperately trying to get into WoW's demographic and failing because of it.

Ag, I disagree. I think Fallen Earth implemented most of their unique ideas rather badly. Or maybe I should say that the ideas need a lot more polish. That is probably a more accurate way of saying it. Unfortunately, when you are stress testing for the public, that is usually a sign that funding is up and they have to release the game in order to bring in more revenue.

With all the MMOs coming out this year and next year and many with similar settings to Fallen Earth, I don't expect much from this title. I wouldn't buy it, and I buy just about everything.

Seriously. Stop saying everything with an extremely passing similarity to WoW is a WoW clone ffs. This game is absolutely nothing like WoW, for better, or for worse. I'm not sure a single similarity can be drawn besides, hey, you can do quests, and you level up.

WoW is an EQ clone anyways, which is a clone of Ultima, which is a clone of the text based MUDs that came before MMO's were barely a twinkle in anyone's eye. Every MMO takes bites out of what came before it, and betters the ideas of its predecessors, or at least tries to.

If FE is a clone of WoW because of quests(all they have in common), then I'm suggesting now, that you skip every MMO that comes out from this point on. Don't even bother looking at them, because they'll all just be WoW clones.

I will say the quests are one of the few gifts that WoW gave the genre. They didn't invent them, but they popularized them. Before that, it was grind in one area until your eyes bled before moving onto the next, and let me ask you, is that enjoyable?

Having said that i can TRY to explain: It's one thing to be inspired by a table-top, a game in the past, a book, a ruleset, any element of any kind, if when you make it, you still do it your own way in the end. It's another thing if you copy the same element exactly as it is. Before WoW all the MMO's were original and strange and creative, we had planetside, neocron, star wars galaxies and luckily we still have EVE. Then WoW came and made everything more accessible and user-friendly. In it quests are everywhere, easy and pleasant to do, with continuous rewards for addictive gratification. Kudos to WoW for coming up with this. It had commercial success. IT created a mass market. So every MMO thought necessary to copy it, and the originality ended.

I don't want simple grind, neither do i want WoW quests. I want a new way to conceive quests and XP... and i don't have to skip every MMO because thank god more games like Mortal will finally come, becayse people got dead sick of clones.

I can entirely agree that 90% of games these days aren't worth checking out, and that's pretty much why I haven't played any MMO's for almost a year now. Truth be told, most are, in fact, extremely similar to WoW. I suppose that's why I've don't get that tingly feeling of being in a new world anymore either. It's the same old, it just has a new skin it, except they somehow keep making things even easier.

I, still don't agree that FE is a clone of WoW, however. It's got too many differences, mediocre or not, that set it apart, from what I experienced.

Ok, then answer this. How many different ways are there to makes quests that are intuitive and don't require you to go sniffing around for keywords ala EQ? Yes, you can make complicated quests that have scripted encounters and out of the ordinary things, but that's hardly efficient use of resources when 90% of people will forget these quests 15 minutes later as they pound out the next quest in search of their level.

"We people" are just as bad as you people that hail everything as a clone of WoW, like you just did, because of one, single, similar feature. I take note of how you didn't mention any other specific ways that this game is similar to WoW, besides quest structure.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter at *all*, because quests are just some pretty dressing on the old model of grind grind grind. They just give you a bit of "purpose" behind your actions and keep you moving smoothly from one area to the next, never keeping you in one place too long.

Have you no sense at all? You're defending quests done in the same way over and over because players are afraid to think too much?

And even if it were ok to think of players as creatures happy to be dumb, there's probably a million ways to conceive questing that's both intuitive, accessible and original, just like WoW was but in an entirely new way.The fact that you can't see it doesn't mean it don't exist... do you realize that your statement is that of a sheep?

As for the other similarities with WoW, crafting itself is entirely the same thing, get the recipe, harvest ingredients, start making the thing. Sure it's a very generic way you can find anywhere, but it's also the EXACT same way crafting happens in WoW. Can't they find a REALLY new way to do it? You say it's different because you gain XP with it. Can't you see what happened there? Can't you see that it's JUST the same thing as in world of warhammer online craft(penny arcade pun ref)? World of Warhammer advertised the fact that you could level up with PvP. FE advertises it with crafting, but it's nothing new in any way.

But i admit i probablyy exaggerated on the "just about everything is like WoW"... but the point is that the activity a player will do for most of his time is QUESTS, at least until the end-game. So it's the most important part of the game, and if that works like WoW i can't help but feel that im playing the same game over and over.

I dropped a new reply on your first post. I honestly can agree on the points you're making now that you gave me a solid reply rather than what sounded like WoW clone spam. :)

I agree, I want inventive quests that are memorable, fun, and original. That require more thought than looking at my minimap and saying, "Oh hey, there's one," and then proceed to tell you exactly where you need to go. There's a market out there that will appreciate some actual thought and effort in their quests and content, but it's absolutely eclipsed by the 500lb gorilla sitting in the room.

That gorilla is WoW. I loved the game, I played it for 3 years solid. As much as I love it though, I hate it. Why? Because it made MMO's mainstream. Everyone will copy them because of their success. Before them, 1 million was insane. After them? 500,000 (Perfectly healthy. EQ hit 500k at its peak) is niche and a dieing failure of a game.

Why take risks to be original and think outside the box, potentially dooming your multi-million $$ game to obscurity, when there's a proven formula out there? MMO's are a business now, for better or for worse. There are bright spots of real originality out there though, so I've got my hopes up.

Just a quick mention. EverQuest 2, and Vanguard. Original, meaningful, interactive crafting that had real purpose at most levels. Difficult enough that not everyone did it, and those that were good at it got real benefits from it.
