One Shots: A story for Sunday

Maybe it's just us, but the drone hives we keep seeing are getting even more wicked-looking; giant, dark, amorphous structures looming in the depths of space. However, along with today's gorgeous EVE Online screenshot, we also have a tremendously cool short story to go with it from Ryl'avin Redwense! As it's a bit long, we'll be placing part of it behind the cut rather than editing it. If you'd like to send in a short story of your own to go with your screenshot, email it to us at oneshots [AT] massively [DOT] com. Now, on with today's excellent EVE Online tale from our very talented reader!
"Warp drive, active." Ryl'avin Redwense lost count of the times she had heard that from the NeoCom.
It was her second day out of Federation space, and the bridge crew aboard the Swiftwind let out a collective gasp as the warp bubble collapsed. This time, she counted.
There were those few warps you did remember.
The massive drone hive loomed before them. Several drones were still at work, welding heaps of scrap metal - no doubt mostly from ill-prepared pilots - into the seemingly organic structure. A dozen more took notice of the Swiftwind's arrival.
"Captain, multiple drone contacts. We're being locked on from every direction!" Ryl'avin listened and watched from inside her capsule.
Agents and their bookmarks, she thought with a grin. "This Destroyer has eight guns and no targets. Why don't we get started?"

It's really sad when players in a game don't understand the most basic concepts of the game...
There is no bridge crew! A capsuleer is a person in a lifepod, cybernetically hooked up to directly control a starship.

I believe the term is "poetic license."

I am aware that the capsuleer is cybernetically hooked up to control the ship. There may be no "bridge" crew--I wrote this over a month ago, not knowing any better--but there is a crew nonetheless. They handle other activities such as managing the cargohold and reloading the guns, as well as general maintenance. This is proven many times in the official Chronicles.
Sorry for that.

@Redwense: I wouldn't worry too much about the complaint. Anyone who comes down on you about adding in a crew should go watch Clear Skies again. ;)

@Krystalle: *Smiles* I'll keep that in mind. Thanks again!
