New Fallen Earth trailer is mean, lean and low on steam
Filed under: Trailers, Fallen Earth, New titles, News items
"Sick of ogres, elves and pixies? So are we. Lose the tights. Bury your crystals. Quit playing with your wand. Come get the real deal. This ain't daddy's MMO. Fallen Earth." These words fill the newest Fallen Earth trailer, which is accompanied by lots of fast camera zooms and punctuated with extreme hard rock. To be fair, we're sure there are many of you out there who're definitely tired of at least some of these things. However, this trailer is low on reality and high on, well, something.
It's almost like the marketing team wasn't aware of the videos and information released to this point, which showed a slower, more laid back MMO. Sure, you shoot things and there's lots of mature, post-apocalyptic content, but it seems like this trailer is aimed at creating a false assumption with players wanting a fast, twitchy run-and-gun, simple MMO that Fallen Earth just isn't.
We think the game could definitely find its audience, which is why this trailer seems incredibly counter-productive. Being genuine is supremely important. Players who figure out you aren't will resent it, and those who don't will become embittered after purchasing something with false expectations. Catch the full -- yet short -- video after the break.

If you’re making an mmo that takes place in a brutal, post-apocalyptic setting, why the hell would you make it slow and laid back? Maybe the devs should try to make a game that meets peoples’ realistic expectations than just another point and click snooze fest that this genre is already laden with.
I don’t really blame the marketing department here. It may be dishonest, but how do you expect them to market a game as being “slow paced, steady and tactical” when such concepts go exactly against the type of Mad Max, Attack of the Mutants genre this setting draws inspiration from?

I like how it's "not Daddy's MMO", yet over half of the people I know that play MMOGs are daddies.
So, this must be all cool and hip, like an MTV movie awards afterparty, eh? ...that's a solid and long lasting player base to market to.

And, ironically, it *is* your daddy's MMO: Neocron. Only, from what I've seen, not even as good as Neocron was seven years ago. So, no, I take it back, it's not your daddy's MMO. Your daddy's MMO did all of this much, much better.

"Sick of ogres, elves and pixies?" Well not really can get sick of that, Other them World of Warcraft and maybe for some Everquest there is no good mmo that use this theme! What I am really sick of is all this games where you shoot things now after the 100s of games that come out where you shoot stuff now we have to deal with some mmos as well that are pretty much Fallout 3 ripoffs?
Really every low IQ person can point a gun and shot stuff there is not really any honor or skill needed for that. Wheel magic or Swords take years of studies and can take a life time to master. And Sword combat is more fair in the end!

I don’t know, as a person who enjoys man different genres of games, I’d have to say that fps’s do take a certain degree of intelligence and at some points even more than that required for an rpg. You need to learn to coordinate and think alongside your team mates in a halo match or cooperative mode as much as you would a raid group. That, coupled with having honed reflexes, and a mind that can think on the fly create a gaming experience that requires thought as well as skill.
Sometimes, mmo’s just feel like I’m typing in continuous patterns over and over again. Use this spell rotation, watch this green or red bar, move two inches to the left every thirty seconds when the boss starts glowing. It all feels very mechanical and hardly as elegant as the thrilling acts of swords and sorcery we all envision in our minds.

Thats gotta be the dumbest shit ive ever heard... a fallout 3 rip-off? well fallout ripped off mad max anyway.... and hell yes Im sick of all this feminine ass swords, robes, staffs, and emotes WOW is for the weak and EVERY MMO out there is based on WOW type dragons and gay shit its relieving to see something branching away from the queer forest genre and getting into something worth playing. your just pissed its not a turn based bore fest....

Hehe the learning curve on this game does not allow for much "fast and furious". It took me months to figure out why I never had any ammo (I have to make it myself! out of copper and wood scraps.....oooooooooh). This game definitely is going to find a market, and that market is bored anarchy online players. It can be either number crunchy or knowledge crunchy, you get to choose. But one thing for the combat I can say is if anything fast well get you pwnd. You need a good clean shot or your just wasting ammo and reload time.

It's not any slower then most other MMOs. Most MMOs have a lot of downtime, usually in the form of travel time. It's not Global Agenda that's for sure, but there's not many MMOs like that to begin with. I don't think the trailer is misleading. I mean, I agree it is a little "in your face" for my tastes, but they did not misrepresent the combat. Aside from the actually shooting

Sure if you only play one class..... But if you play multi classes in a game like WoW it take skill to get the best healing and dps and tanking stats and DPS can be a real pain and contest to top other players... Also boss fights take plans to kill you not just go in and fire you continuous patterns like it will not work.
Most people that not really known there class just do the same continuous patterns over and over. Sadly Blizzard make it more easy and easy to level so they really not even have to learn there class till max level... :(
reflexes, and a mind that can think on the fly is needed for all good MMO games its just a way of thinking what you like more do you like the guns and shot you way tru everything or do you think its too much close to the real world and do you like something a little out of this world more history with fantasy and much more deep story behind what you are doing.... And story really is what keep the PVE player going.
Oh may god "Insert lame county name here" just drop a nuke on the USA!!! You was lucky to get in a bunker on time!! Woot!! Hold on your food stuck is low you goto go outsize and check out the "world"......
Oh no we are stock on a Planet/Space ship/Missie to save the U! Lets blast everything that we can to get out and save our self and the U!
that's pretty much is the story of shooter games sadly :(

They ask if we're sick of fantasy then provide screenshots of a squig with feathers. How nice.

I was very excited to be invited to the Closed beta over a year ago. I've played it off and on here and there - I just can't get into it. If you're expecting a fallout style MMO, you're going to be dissappointed.
Actually - if you're expecting a good MMO at all, you'll be disappointed. The graphics engine is a pile of garbage, the animations suck, the textures are blah. Don't even get me started on the story or the voiceovers.

I really don't like how these trailers are making fantasy mmos look... I mean it's like they're not trying to get people who are genuinely interested in the genre rather than haters of WoW, WAR and other similar titles. It's like making a pizza hut and saying "we aint mcdonalds, if you hate them we're for you!"

This game really is not as fast paced as the trailer conveys though and honestly most games are MUCH faster than this game, two days at 6 hours a day and I still have not reached level 3.
The trailer is definately a bit misleading

I think maybe my play experiences are a tad different from the writer of this piece. The first character I made was a mess, I spent all my chips on stuff I didn't need, invested in the wrong skills etc. The next character I made was after I did some reading. She was focused on Melee, and focused on only a few skills and stats. Instead of random tradeskills I would never use I bought battle skills, good armor and weapons. If I need something I overspend in chat to get it from people who actually like tradeskills. I have the money so why not?
For this character now, the game IS run and gun. I can if I choose run into pretty much any place my level or within a few above me and slaughter whatever I choose. At level 8 I soloed a level 12 group based boss. Whether I should be able to is a question for the devs, but with the proper preperation and equipment it CAN be run and Gun. It is much harder to do this with ranged skills at early levels, however once you get real range (70 meters), a scope and a good weapon you can kill stuff well before it gets to you.
That being said the trailer really doesn't do the game justice. It has a wicked sense of humor and takes a game set in a desert and gives it varied terrain. The main slowing factor on the game at this point in time, is a overly detailed LOC system, and lack of online data, both of which will be solved as the game matures.

I tried the Fallen Earth stress test.. Glad I didn't get my hopes up for this game, it is pretty much a steaming pile of bugs, poor animations, boring designed areas and.. Well, the combat is a joke. Shame, but if you want to make an mmo like this you at least have to come close to Fallout 3 in design quality, which it doesn't. You also need to make the combat on par with said game, the first person 'action' feels like a very stiff 90s shooter, I've seen the FPS combat done well in other mmos..

Heh, my friend told me that if you want to craft, you better have a DS, PSP, or other form entertainment at hand, cause it can take 10+ mins to make even one item.
Yeah, definitely fast-paced and deserving of a thrilling, high-action trailer...

Yep, people who are willing to play a bad game because they love post-apocalyptic and don't have any other options in their setting-of-choice.

Actually I like the setting, never played a similar other MMO (with fallout setting). Now I tried the stress test and found out it is mostly crap. I watched Fallen Earth since a while and never got the feeling it will have fianally a great production value.
Now I have to admit, the gameplay mechanics is pretty standard and slow. Graphics is poor, but hey ... graphics is for beginners! ;) If it was even a great gameplay, then graphics never count for me. The only part of the game, that got my attention was the crafting and that you have to learn a lot of skills in order to make your own gear. Even long crafting duration is not bad - I think it's even cool (you can play meanwhile).
Yeah, finally the very standard boring gameplay sucks. I am currently playing Darkfall because of this extra "thrill" due to the fast paced game play. Give me Darkfall in a fallout setting - I will love it :)
