Twitter added to Champions Online, social butterflies rejoice
Filed under: Super-hero, New titles, News items, Champions Online
The first July 2009 State of the Game for Champions Online is out and it sure came with an interesting surprise. Namely, the addition of Twitter to the in-game feature set. Now we're sure some of you will scoff at this idea, but sit there for a moment while we paint you a mental picture.
You're inside a rather challenging instance, only moments away from the big fight. Your party is getting ready, resting up, etc and so you take a moment to hammer out a short message to your friends on Twitter. "Oh man, about to take on my Nemesis, Big Bad Boss Man, wish us luck!" you say, netting you a few encouraging replies. Then you engage and the ensuing carnage is nigh legendary. The party just takes a serious beating and is torn limb from heroic limb by your Nemesis. You decide to share this with the world, only to see your buddies instantly share their empathetic thoughts on your embarrassing defeat.
We think it's got some substantially fun possibilities. Plus, if Cryptic can work in Twitter support to their games, what else could they do? Facebook seems like the next step, but there's also Pandora and Last.FM support to consider, too.

didn't they clearly state that this was still under NDA? or does that not apply to the press in this case? not to be a dick, I'm just curious

So long as they use the Twitter API and don't ask for the account password, I'm all for it.
Though since I've got dual monitors, I'm not sure how often I'd use the in-game tweet feature to manually tweet, but I'm sure it'll be handy for automated stuff like dinging/major quest competition etc. (followed by a flurry of "gz" replies :-P)

Its a silly feature, but it fits considering how well integrated the game is with the web.

That's... interesting... not entirely sure it's useful, but interesting. Most of the use I've seen Twitter get is for news and news discussion, but we'll see.
Would love to see an MMO with integrated XMPP (Jabber, same protocol Google Talk uses) support, personally. Let me send messages from XuguMadison@championsonline.com to MyFriend@worldofwarcraft.com (although obviously names would have to be a little more complex), without having a third-party IM client in the loop...

Theoretically, wouldn't WoW contacts be character@realm.territory.worldofwarcraft.com ?
Xugu Madison said on 10:58AM 7-02-2009
I was considering character%realm@worldofwarcraft.com , but your idea makes more sense. Territory is in the domain, at least for WoW, though; there's www.wow-europe.com for Europe, for example.

Ugh. I can't stand social networking sites. I've been looking forward to Champions Online, and I hope people don't expect others to use Twitter to organize groups, raids, and such. If they do, I'll be canceling my account.

Unlikely. It isn't with their business interests to have an essential part of the gameplay experience rely upon a third-party service that they don't operate (since it could go down, rendering the game near-impossible to play)

Territory is a sub-domain of the Armory :-P

It's a smart step. Integrating social media into gaming, especially MMO's which are social games, is a smart move. Expect many more to follow, although some have already been doing this (LotRO) and most have huge social following groups (WoW, EVE).
