Champions Online busts out its PvP trailer
Filed under: Video, New titles, PvP, News items, Champions Online
Cryptic is churning out Champions Online videos at a faster pace as of late, between this PvP trailer and the recently released character creation walkthrough video. Although that's probably to be expected with September a mere seven weeks away. We're pretty certain that everyone in the MMO house that superheroism built are feeling the pressure as of late.
Speaking of pressure, this new PvP trailer really does everything it can to make us feel it -- but in a good way. We'd say it succeeds int reassuring watchers that PvP will be exciting and dramatic in Champions Online. Our only suggestion for Cryptic would be not to stop here; keep expanding the Hero Games. It doesn't need to be crazy, but something tells us the current offering will only sate people for so long.
At the end of the day, it all really depends on having a fun, balanced and rewarding experience. Here's hoping there's plenty of reason to pound our superpowered buddies in the face come the month of September. Oh, yeah, you can find the full Giant Bomb-hosted trailer after the break.

I have 4 friends in Beta. Only two know each other. All 4 have said that the game isn't worth a monthly fee. They said it's fun in small bursts, and would be great in a GW pricing model, but they'd never P2P for it.
As far as PvP... it's all instnaced... and those maps look tiny.

Most people wouldn't pay to play a game in beta state anyway. That is why they aren't charging for it.

Oh come on. I'm not arguing semantics here.
Their evaluations are of what the developers have provided of the game thus far, and 'when it does go live' it's not something enticing enough to hold their attention or be worh paying a monthly sub for.
Don't be stupid.

JP: That's what I've been hearing as well, which is a shame really.
My opinion of CoH was that it was a blast to make a character and fly around the city fighting crime... but that it lacked any depth, quickly devolved into a repetitive grind, and ultimately couldn't keep my interest for more than a few weeks. I have a feeling CO will be the same.

You really never should judge a game on the closed beta, I know everyone does it but it is not really a good judge of the game at launch. Open beta is a much better time to start the judging but even that is not prefect as it does not really give you any insight as to what the community will be like.
That said I am looking forward to Champions and I am happy they are not trying to force PVP into it in a way that does not fit. As it is now I am going to be looking for my PVP fix from other games but dabble in it in champions from time to time.

That's because pretty much every MMO out there charging a monthly fee isn't worth it. Subscriptions have to go, and if Champions launches using a subscription model, they'll just be stuck with low numbers in a few months (after that huge launch wave) and then will be wondering what went wrong.
Gotta stop with the subscriptions, it's just a dead/dying business model for gaming.
Battlefront Heroes launched, F2P game with RMT/microtransactions, over a million users now. It's the way to go. Sell box copies even, but don't try to charge a subscription fee, it's the path to failure.

Firebreak,
Come on, I hope you don't think some game altering patch to going to happen with CO. This is open beta now, the damn game is going to come out in 8 weeks or so. We have seen it with just about every game to date, what you see now is what you get at release.
Nothing more and a whole lot less.

Except that the game is not in open beta right now. Nice try though ;)

Wow, arena style pvp. People seem to love that in other mmo’s.

Looks like they've spent a lot of time on this... that's too bad. Their days will be consumed class-balancing for 1v1 thru 10v10.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duel
"a duel is an engagement in combat between two individuals, with matched weapons in accordance with their combat doctrines."
sounds like "player versus player" to me, but i r not sow gud et engrish

You can be literal and be a smart ass if you want thats fine. Hitting /duel is ghey and its not any sort of real PvP and you know it. Arena PvP is meaningless and boring as well.

wow, that looks awful.
I agree, Dueling is not pvp, its lame
just fell off my list

I wouldn't even like to guess just how horrible a job it will be trying to balance that PvP, given the mammoth list of freeform skills, skill upgrades and travel powers bandied about.
Even at the most optimistic - and regardless of skill balance - Ive got to guess the game will launch with at least half-a-dozen strong ways to just bore opponents into submission: perpetual teleports, stacking nothing but defenses or CC, lowest cost flight skill plus absurd altitudes (assuming any open area arenas)...

World PVP > Battlegrounds > Arenas
Doesn't look like something I'd play, but I never really expected much PVP from a Cryptic game though.

Was anyone honestly expecting serious PvP from a superhero game?
Y'know...outside of the twats that expect it *everywhere*?

I could not agree more, I love PVP but I really want it to fit into the story and not be forced in or slapped on top of it.
THAC0 said on 2:59PM 7-14-2009
Why would there be no PvP in a superhero game as you elude to? Or rather why would anyone not expect it?
Also you seem to be the T^^47 here sir. Your the only one in here calling names and its uncalled for.

Because it is, I repeat, a *superhero* game in a *comic book* like setting. Unless this is Champions as re-envisioned by Alan Moore hero-on-hero pvp won't (and shouldn't) be a focus of the game. And playable villains are not a likely possibility given the headaches that caused in City of Heroes.
And if you're going to insult me, do it like an adult. Twat.
