An early peek at the DC Universe Online storyline

Filed under: Super-hero, Interviews, New titles, Quests, DC Universe Online

DC Universe Online is a superhero MMO in development at Sony Online Entertainment, but one that we didn't get to see much of at E3 2009. That's not going to be the situation with Comic-Con International which is happening this week in San Diego. The DC Universe Online team will be on hand and will hopefully reveal more about the game.

While you won't get to play as Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, you will begin the game as a hero who fights alongside such comic book icons. In fact, once you roll a character you'll choose a specialty from among super powers, tech powers, or magic powers. That choice will determine the storyline you begin with, according to info revealed in a Variety article. Sony Online Entertainment gave Chris Morris from Variety's 'The Cut Scene' an exclusive on how players will begin the game.

Morris writes, "Superheroes will find themselves involved in a Superman storyline the minute they begin playing. Tech heroes will work alongside Batman. And magic heroes will apprentice with Wonder Woman." On the flipside, supervillains will team up with Lex Luthor for their capers, while tech villains work with the Joker and magic-using baddies join forces with Circe.

Variety uses the example of a superhero player entering DC Universe Online for the first time. You'll be introduced to Superman who briefs you on the situation -- villains are capturing other heroes and you need to work together to stop them. Regardless of whether you're teamed up with Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, the missions you complete will "all feed into the game's central plot" as you encounter some of the setting's major villains, writes Morris.

DCUO writer Marv Wolfman confirms that the introduction to the game will work much the same for players who'd rather be villains. Wolfman says, "If you're working with the Joker, he doesn't care about you -- he believes in chaos. He could throw you in the thick of danger." The idea, Morris explains, is that you'll have constant interaction with characters from the DC Comics universe, heroes and villains alike. And hopefully, that interaction will lead you down some unexpected paths, as one would expect from dealing with the Joker.

More info about DC Universe Online's gameplay and storyline is expected to be revealed during Comic-Con International in San Diego over the next few days. However, if you're looking for more info about your favorite DC heroes and villains entering the MMO space, be sure to check out Variety's exclusive on the DCUO storyline.
