Aion Collector's Edition pre-orders top Steam weekly sales
Filed under: Fantasy, Aion, Economy, Launches, New titles
It's been a stellar week of digital pre-order sales for Aion, with the upcoming title taking top honors on Steam's weekly sales chart. Specifically, it was the Collector's Edition of the game that did so well. Keep in mind that this is not the same as the Limited Collector's Edition, which contains physical items like the Asmodian Daeva figurine that might be too difficult to distribute digitally with our current technology. It does however still contain a handful of in-game items that the regular edition doesn't. The pre-sale of both versions comes with guaranteed access to a couple of closed beta events, as well as an attribute boosting hat, an experience boosting talisman and a "special effects ring".
Interestingly, the pre-order for the regular edition didn't crack Steam's top 10. It seems that, just like with the Limited Collector Edition from brick-and-mortar stores, people are happy to pay just a little bit more for that extra something. Steam is selling the regular pre-order for US$49.99 and the collector's edition for US$59.99. The weekly sales chart is based on revenue, so Aion's asking price would have helped it beat popular budget-priced titles.

Will the people who buy the game on Steam be able to actually *play* it? I've heard GameGuard makes a fuss about Steam being on, and I don't know if you can run games purchased on Steam if you turn Steam off...

The beta client ran normally even with Steam on. I had absolutely no problem with it.
To be on topic, that doesn't much in Europe where it costs 60 flippin' euros for the collectors edition (50 for normal). I bought the normal version for about 30 pounds (35 euros) off Direct2Drive and I am very satisfied.

Got mine from Steam and it works just dandy. Played using it during the last beta phase..

I would have went this route if it only contained a digital download of the soundtrack. I am glad I got my physical CE

I would have gone the Steam route, if it was available during the first Pre-Order beta weekend.

Can't stand Steam personally, but glad Aion is selling well everywhere it's sold. Pre-ordered the CE myself and felt it was worth the money - I don't know if I would buy an online version of it though...I like the physical crap :)

I've seen this at the top for a while every time I log into steam and I'm tempted to buy it. Though it's selling great, I'm on the fence with this game. I've played one of the betas and it looks great but deep down something is telling me that it's more of the same.
Why can't I quit MMOs completely? :(

Because MMOs can be way too fun ;) Lets face it - if you've played a good MMO, chances are some of your moments playing them are among the best gaming times you've had!
Keyword phrase there is "a good MMO." Bad MMOs are just, well... bad.

They do mimic the physical drug addiction thing, that early good hit, you just keep chasing it but it will (very probably) just never be duplicated. (not saying I know this from experience, just this is what's said) I know my early best experience with a old hard game, big death penalty, (original Everquest Kunark era) I've not had such a height of fun with anything since. Some fun here/there yes, but just not that length of time and level of fun.

i hate having to log in just to play a game i own on my box, confused why steam is so big when u get the same service from direct2drive and you don't have to log in....

I prefer steam over direct2drive. Not only am I always logged onto steam but it's good enough as a service that I want to keep using it. Steam overlay is great for talking to friends, Steam cloud is useful if you use multiple computers and it's nice being able to just install steam on a new PC and set up the download for all your games. Sure, you could do that with Direct2drive but I'd rather not.
I do use Direct2drive for MMO purchases though, but everything else I use Steam. I also find that Steam has a larger selection of games and the sales are great.
Really though I don't get what all this fuss about having to stay logged on is about. Chances are if you are posting here and, hell, if you play MMOs you probably are connected to the internet pretty much 24/7.

the reason it sold so many at steam is because before the launch day steam was saying you got the figure. one of the reasons i bought it from steam was that the page specifically had that listed on it. i just figured they would mail the figure out.
i will never use or recommend steam to anyone. bunch of bastards. when i tried to get my money back before using the game. they refused, changed the page. and they don't offer refunds of ANY kind on the games. such crap.
