A Wild Hunt leads to Warhammer's one year anniversary

What happens when you don't appease a god in the Warhammer Online universe? They get angry -- very, very angry. And then they smash things. Unfortunately, it appears as though the High Elves have been too focused on the RvR campaign to properly honour Kurnous with their annual sacred hunt and it has greatly displeased the God of the Hunt and Lord of the Beasts. His retaliation sets the stage for a new Live Event called Wild Hunt, which releases August 31, 2009 and leads into the game's first anniversary.

Mythic just released Grab Bag no. 21, which is full of Hunty goodness. Players will be granted special access to a new dungeon called Hunter's Vale for one week. This dungeon is accessed from RvR areas and is not warded, which puts the tier 4 version on par with Bastion Stair. Each tier will get its own version and lower level players will even be bolstered once inside so they can contribute.

A lot of effort goes into the game's monthly Live Events and they seem to be quite a hit with players. Some of the events will be annual, like the Wild Hunt and Night of Murder and some of them will be unique and introduce game-changing content to the world (e.g., Rise of the Tomb Kings and Bitter Rivals). It doesn't appear as though Mythic will be letting up any time soon.

I feel bad for Mythic...they really are trying everything they can to fix their mess...I still don't think EA will give them a choice....before long they will step in and Earth And Beyond WAR.

I don't feel bad for them they keep listening to the RVR tards...they said that the game was to cater to many play styles but these idiots get on the forums and cry like babies over anything that isn't DAoC style RVR, and nothing is ever good enough and god help Mythic if they try to give anything to teh significant amount of players that enjoy PVE as well.

Mythic needs to tell the RVR's to STFU if they don't like it to go play Darkfall.

Another one of Mythic's amazing events built using their proprietary event building engine. They have you repeat actions A to C for an entire week and if you fill the bar you win up to three items. Grinders rejoice! That's when I called it quits. Having me killing 1000 random spawning ghosts to get some stupid item is not my idea of an event or fun for that matter. Sometime the grinding factor in this game makes Lineage II seem casual.

Nothing to see here folks, just the final spasms of a dying patient. Move along. The doctor will be here soon to call in the time of death.

I really think that this is just another stunt to get their seerver numbers back up to what they were before the "easter crash" although some people didn't experiance this( i'm not sure about the US severs but it was certainly like this on some of the EU ones) it affected some servers hugely, they also probably have hopes that it will keep their player from moving to the new shiny one which are to be released around the time the event is going on. To me the event looks pretty good it's always nice to involve a little bit more lore into the MMO to give a the old tabletop players(such as myself) a feeling of imersion into the Warhammer Fantasy world that some peope crave for. There is also the question of if they will get the dungeon "playable" in time for the event. Some of the dungeons from launch still have buggy monsters or pathing issues that Mythic have not attended to, If they get it perfect on release, hats off to them, but with their record i'm slightly abivolent that they will achievewhat they setout to do.

Stormdragon, can you let me know where you got that new mount, I've not seen the 'High Horse' drop in Warhammer Online, I imagine it's very hard to dismount.....

Back on topic, Warhammer Online is the game that I just wish was better, as I've got a big space right now in my interests, and I'm looking for a new game, but I've tried WAR a few times, but it just never grabs me. Things like the interface put me off, the fact that the world seems a little lacking, a bit disjointed, the PvP is sort of, I dunno, claustrophobic, even though the zones can be quite large.

PvP just seems to be more fun in WoW to me, and we all know those shortcomings, and without as much PvE content, WAR struggles to compete for my attention at least.

Great to see we all kicked off Monday with a real bang!

War was always a pvp game. Even though forts and cities had some pve mobs, you fight them at the same time while fending off enemy players.

War did not tank because there was a lack of decent pve content. Sure they lost some players who thought there was gonna be decent pve content, but it's when they lost the pvp faithfuls that the game starting going south.

Horrible class balance and a completely broken end game which they are still trying to fix almost a year after launch. These are what killed Warhammer.

I stuck with the game for over 7 months, but it just kept getting worst and worst with each and every patch.

From a certain point on, it almost seemed as if the dev's had completely lost sight of what they were trying to do with the game and were just flailing about blindly in the dark, hoping to score that miracle patch that would stem the bleed.

Unfortunately for Mythic and companies like Funcom, the mmo market has evolved and people will not stay in games that just plain don't work. With the amount of choices we get nowadays, once you lose us we'll just take our money elsewhere. We are not gonna sit content and fund you while you diddle around for a year to fix your game.

Good lord - did you get up on the even-more-wrong-than-usual side of the bed today, JP? I think you're becoming a contender for the Mr Angry moniker.

On topic - I noticed an email inviting me back for a free 10-days, so despite being a protester of most WAR-related things over the months past launch, I decided to take a look today.

I rolled a Shaman on Ironrock after watching Taugrim's videos on YouTube, and I must say I've had fun today.

The population seemed fine, with scenarios popping every 15 mins or so, and I got to R7RR7 after a couple of hours of very enjoyable play time.

The HUD configuration options have certainly been tidied up a lot (especially the hotbar) and if the recent PTR patch notes stay true to form then maybe things are indeed starting to look up, for me anyhow.

Can't say whether or not I'd be willing to slap down a sub yet, but I most definitely had a great time.
I guess I'll know in 10 days how things pan out..

T1 is as fun as it gets in online pvp. once you break free from that tier and start moving up towards T4, the games starts to tank.

I think they would have been better off designing the entire game around T1.

I wish I could like that game again, LotD really killed it off for me after feeling like Mythic wasn't taking the appropriate actions towards making the game better. The core is good, the lore is there, even the execution isn't half bad, but they seemed to have headed in the opposite direction of where they should have gone.

Has anyone else ever noticed how despite that fact that the people who like PvP and PvP game aspects are supposed to be the hate filled psychos, lunatics, trolls, whatever, it's the PvE players who tend (and no, I'm obviously not talking about ALL, just a loud minority) who tend to be the ones running their little fingers off flaming?

I don't remember ( I could be wrong) seeing on any forum about games anywhere, some PvP telling the 'care bares' how they all suck and should be performing unnatural acts with themselves, not without provocation anyway.

I'm not saying this game deserves it, now or then. one way or the other, but it's weird.... but probably shouldn't be surprising.

I agree that grind is the base of any MMO ever created. But the whole point of an event is to make you do something special that would take you away from the usual grinding routine. A horse race like in LOTRO, a demonic infestation attacking the city, an arena competition event or even something social.

All Mythic did is to invent this retarded event creation tool that consists of a single page at the end of the Tome where you have an image, some sound and a little bar with 3 rewards. That's it. They celebrate the grind instead of trying to avoid it. And then Mythic has the nerve to go out in public telling everyone how great the game is and how much content it has because they are coming out with an "event" every two months.

Look, I am the first one to admit that I am little burned out on the genre. But I have been playing RPGs and MMORPGs for almost 20 years since the days of Ultima V. When MMORPG became popular I played them as an alternative to the single player RPG. It was just more fun with other people. But I always played a game until the point where it had no more new content for me. I am not looking for a "home". I want to play a game. I love to explore areas and dungeons for the first few times. I don't mind the loot and xp grind as they are part of the game. But I don't do loot runs where I do the same dungeon 100 times. It's boring. I play until I feel the world has been explored enough and then I move on to the next game. There is no end game. There is the end OF the game.

WAR has very little content and what it has is inferior to everything else on the market. Mythic based their game solely on the PVP Oriented MMORPG formula which IMHO doesn't work and never will. The competitive nature of hardcore PVP crowds with the complexity of an MMO will always create a result in a balancing nightmare that very few companies can handle. It just doesn't work. People get mad at every buff and nerf and leave. This is not Team Fortress 2, Counter Strike or DotA. It's just random people fighting in uneven teams for no reason whatsoever other than to grind. It's repetitive, unbalanced and boring.

That is my opinion anyway and I am sure there are other people out there who feel the same.
