Aion open beta client now available for download

Aion's open beta is officially on the way so everybody will be able to sample the delights of Atreia between September 6th and 13th. Ahead of this, NCsoft has announced the availability of the Aion beta client. The client can now be downloaded from various corners of the internet, including FilePlanet and GamersHell, but the company has also announced they are making it available via BitTorrent.
Despite its shady reputation as the medium of choice for file-sharers and illegal downloads, BitTorrent itself is quite legal. Indeed it's a popular method of downloading files which has been embraced by numerous companies over the years. However, if you still want to use traditional methods, NCsoft has also announced that FilePlanet will be giving away a selection of open beta keys beginning Tuesday, September 1st. But anyone who has pre-ordered the game or won a full beta key from a competition just have to bid their time until the open beta begins.

This is an open beta only in name, as it's only available to preorders, closed beta testers, and File Planet subscribers.

Did you miss the part where they said: "If you won a full beta key through a competition..."
They gave away other keys as well as the closed beta progressed I'd be shocked if they didn't do the same for open beta. You just have to pay attention.

Agree it's NOT open beta, period.

"Open" implies that it's actually open...i.e. anyone can sign up and play.

Well at least it's more open than the Champions Online "open" beta! :D

I sure wish more games would distribute via BitTorrent. It's very good at downloading giant files over several days, much better than the gamer-hostile sites like FilePlanet. The Aion installer is 9 gigs; wow.

The NCSoft launcher download was horrid. Go torrent or something else. I was getting 14-27KBs.

The NCsoft auto update locked up on me overnight and apparently corrupted my install. Torrent is now chuggin' right along. I'm really glad they did this.

They cal this an "open beta" for the lack of a better term. If it was indeed open there would be a lot more interest. As it stands they want people to pay which would fall into the category of an "Pre-launch beta test". Still looks like a miss to me...

Agreed that this "open" beta needs clarification. I simply want to know if I will be able to try out the game before I buy it.

"everybody will be able to sample the delights of Atreia between September 6th and 13th."
That sounds like it is a true open beta and anyone can play during that week. We'll see I guess.

I was under the impressing that an open beta was meant to get as many people in the game as possible to test server capacity and latency. Apparently this isn't the goal of their open beta. It seems more along the lines of; make money while we can beta.

By under the impressing, I mean I am under people that have the ability to impress. Damn multitasking.

Just a note, if you ALREADY played the closed beta all you need is a lovely 3G transition patch >http://www.fileplanet.com/204241/200000/fileinfo/Aion-CBT-to-OBT-Client-Patch-

BitTorrent has been used for years by Blizzard to distribute WoW and it's patches. Just sayin'.
