Vanguard gets final 3 weapon sets: Druid, Necro, Sorcerer
Filed under: Fantasy, Classes, News items, Vanguard

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes doesn't get as much attention as other SOE games, but it clearly has a dedicated community of players. It's also a game that has seen a significant amount of change since it launched, and the developers are continually improving Vanguard through player input.
The latest announcement from the Vanguard developers is about the new weapon sets they're going to introduce, specifically for the Druid, Necro, and Sorcerer classes. They write: "You might have thought that we forgot about 3 certain classes when we were featuring some of the new weaponry. Never fear, this week we were able to wrangle the final 3 weapon sets up for everyone to check out in all their glory."
They've put together wallpapers for the new weapons, including their off-hand variants, so check it out on the official Vanguard: Saga of Heroes site.

They do look really nice. I have nothing but respect for the quality work that the Vanguard team has put forth.

Vanguard has come along way since its poor launch.
I came back to the game a couple months ago and have been thoroughly enjoying my time in Telon!

I would like to see Massively do some "second-look" reviews of some of the games, like Vanguard and AoC, that have been out a while.
I (for one) would be really interested to hear about whether -- and how much -- some of these games have actually improved since launch.

Massively's recently done a second look at AoC. That said, I'd welcome a Vanguard second look!

I can't say enough just how impressive this game is now. We all know how tumultuous the launch was (and the following year or so). That is but a distant memory.

Maybe I'll give it a try. I just read about some of the healing classes and they sound refreshing.

I'm betting you read about the Disciple. My favorite class to be honest.

Vanguard was/is an excellent game in many regards. The abysmal launch has unfortunately caused unrecoverable damage to the population however, the pvp servers are simply empty. :(

I played a necro at launch cause I liked the feature of being able to add items to your pets. One item I found was some claw that was supposed to do a lifetap for the pet. In reality, the item actually HEALED the mobs you were fighting for almost all of their hp and procced every couple of seconds. This claw item was also stuck on my pet permanently. This is the only MMO I've regretted purchasing. I really wish they had given me my $50 back at launch. I doubt I will ever play another soe mmo again, despite loving eq1 and eq lore.

I recently returned to the game, being gone since the horrible launch - and I can honestly say it's the most fun I've had in an MMO in years. I wrote a bit about my experience here (few posts down, look for Sine909):

The game has a free trial, with a redone starting zone. It's a lot of fun, great class design and the most hands on interactive combat I've seen in an MMO.

Sometimes I fantasize about having the money to buy Vanguard from SOE and re-launching it. I think it's the best MMO on the market and even as much as I loved EQ for all those years Vanguard with full servers would be the best MMO of all time.

Really nice writeup Sine...makes me want to try out the game right now! Plenty of classes, races and things to do other than level has me sold on a few months playtime.
Getting to the end of my tether as I get stuck on landscape for the 200th time in Warhammer and hitting my 100th indentical keep.
I wouldn't mind a bit of a solo MMO guild wars-ish adventuring experience. Even just for a bit of nostalgia for the games of old. Perhaps Vanguard can fill this need, as long as it's not completely dead yet!

Ehh, I had a look at Vanguard's free trial a couple of months ago, and the first impression it gives is exceedingly poor. It comes across as a mediocre WoW clone. Maybe it gets better, but I really doubt that many people would purchase it after the trial, given the standard generally expected in 2009.

If you're calling WoW a "standard", please do me a favor and exit stage left. There are no standards in MMOs, and I for one welcome any and all innovation. Vanguard is full of it, albeit subtle. Just because it's not your cup of tea doesn't make it "exceedingly poor", it just makes it not WoW. (That's a good thing)

LOL. WoW clone? If ANYTHING it’s an EQ clone. It’s about x1000 times more intuitive then WoW could ever hope to be. It’s also about that much better looking then WoW. Shit, I could shove paint up my ass and fart out better looking graphics then WoW.
OT :
I played the trial about 3 months ago as well. The things that killed it for me was that I felt it was a little to daunting w/ SO many systems and stats, and I felt very very alone in the world. But overall, it’s a gorgeous and deep game.
The only bug I ran across was connecting to the authorization server through Station was a PITA quite a lot.

As a long time VG player, I'd say VG is excellent, but it's one drawback is the lack of support offered by SOE to its dev team.
SOE management has essentially kept the devs dangling in the wind, out in the wild to fend for themselves. It's shocking that they are able to provide the development they do, and a testament to their dedication.

I gave Vanguard a whirl about 2 months ago. I thought the game was great, but the lag was horrible. I have a GE 8600 GT and 4 gig of ram and I would constantly have to /flush to clear the cache. Huge memory leaks. If they redid base os of the game to a different platform I think it would help a great deal.
Loved the game, just couldn't put up with that much lag.

Quite refreshing.
