Community upset over Champions Online launch day patch
Filed under: Launches, Patches, News items, Champions Online
Today was launch day for Champions Online, but it was also apparently a patch day as well. The patch in question wasn't exactly documented normally, although you can get the gist of it from this official forum post.
Some of these balance and bug changes were expected, but some weren't. Specifically, players have been in an uproar over the lack of a free respec in lieu of enemy difficulty and power changes made to the game, and have so far racked up nearly 700 replies and over 32,000 views on the subject in a thread over on the official forums.
Thankfully, there are clear signs that Cryptic is taking notice, even if they aren't replying in the firestorm of a thread requesting a patch rollback. Additionally, a proper test server is forthcoming for future patches, which should help to avoid similar upsets within the community and allow everyone's opinion to be heard before serious changes are made to the game.

That has to be one of the whiniest communities I think I have ever seen in a MMO and that's saying something.

No kidding. And listening to the forum community isn't always the best thing for a game.

They are pretty immature for the most part, but this patch has made the game well-near unplayable for a majority of people. My own level 18 character can no longer solo anything at all, I was forced to start over.
Cryptic should honestly know better than to no-warning patch the game so severely. But then again this is Roper we're talking about.

@knightsaber
This patch was without doubt a major SNAFU. I'm pretty amazed that they would nerf defensive abilities while simultaneously boosting enemy damage. It would have made a lot more sense to adjust one, then adjust the other if the first wasn't sufficient.
I have a level 23 Force character with robots to help out. While it really was unreasonable that yesterday he was able to easily solo archvillains two levels higher than him, it's equally unreasonable that today he gets his keester handed to him by a single villain/henchman pair that's only one level higher. Three henchmen are a tough fight.
Healing powers have also been nerfed. Field Drones and Nanobot Swarm have, anyway. My character has 3400 health. The field drones heal me (if they decide to target me and not something else) for up to 130 damage every 5 seconds. That's less than 4% of my total health, meaning that it takes them over a minute to return me to full health. And as I said, that's IF they decide to heal me. They also have the two battle bots that they are trying to keep healthy, not to mention any drive-by heals that they might decide to throw on a nearby friendly. I tried one fight where I didn't put the battle bots out at all. It was just me, both field drones, a villain and a henchman with no other players around. I died.
In short, I've gone from feeling super to feeling like a wimp in a single day. Your own experience sounds similar, and I'm sure we're nowhere close to alone. I can certainly understand the community being up at arms about something so drastic. I'm not looking to be an overpowered god. I simply want a game that is FUN and makes you feel like a superhero. What we have as of this morning is the opposite.
As of right now, I've hung up my tights until they come back to some sort of middle ground.

They may be "whiny" but it's because they have to be.
Why? Because their comments and concerns - as paying customers, mind you - get dismissed as if they are all nothing more than whiny kids.
That type of bs worked wonders for Funcom with AoC, lemme tell ya...
Listening to input and addressing the community is VERY important to the outcome of an MMO. And balancing out everyone's concerns and needs is one of the biggest struggles. No, you can't make everyone happy, but you can at least put forth a visible effort to keep everyone somewhat enjoying the game.
It took WoW ages to even start to get that down, and they still have issues with inadvertently gimping certain things by buffing and nerfing this or that too much in response to people's comments.
This shouldn't be all that shocking though. Cryptic couldn't address serious issues with people completely unable to patch and play the game on the first day of open beta. Didn't really expect launch to go without a hitch, did we?

'Ruined 4EVAH!' over and over and over again is not useful input.

You are so very wrong. The whole ballance of the game was changed. In interview after interview with those who run the game, they said the same thing, they said how they wanted to make an MMO where you could fight a group of weaker monsters at once rather than have to take on one at a time and then rest after. Suddenly launch day comes, and these weak "henchmen" are able to take on your Super Hero. There are many different levels of power, with henchmen being the lowest. We were always promised that we would be able to feel like super heroes and take on a bunch of henchmen at once. All of a sudden without warning, the whole game changes on launch day and these wimpy monsters are suddenly super hard to defeat and your hero drops very fast. People voice their opinions about their disappointment, which makes total sense, and you want to call it "whining"? You have no idea what you are talking about, you just want to come and run your mouth and insult people. The people are voicing their disappointment in the huge unannounced nerfs that happened and totally changed the game. You however, are uninformed and just being a troll.

"Can't solo anything anymore...."
Seriously?! I can't even imagine a build that couldn't solo something without some seriously poor playing behind it.
My total support character with only the most basic offensive powers can still take down a Master Villain. It's much more difficult than before, sure, but before was just stupidly easy. Now villains are actually villains, and henchmen are still insanely easy to defeat, like they're supposed to be.
If you're having problems, maybe you need to invest in some CC, defense, or support abilities. Being all offense is fine and dandy, but just because you can solo all the way up doesn't mean that if you min/max it will be easy. Specializations are generally for group play.
For the record, I have 3 characters, one is near total support, one is a pet maniac, and one is pretty much sticking to Darkness. None of these are considered in any way powerful, and my main (the pet master) is possibly one of the more broken, with the non-scaling drone heals and insanely stupid pet AI.
I have no problems with killing things or completing quests solo with any character, my main is in the 20s atm.
Quit whining and learn to play video games. Maybe start with mario or something. CO is not hard, it is just less easy now.

I had no problem soloing just fine. I played for about 15 hours with 4 different characters. The game is finally balanced well and they are going to turn it back to EZ-mode because a bunch of whiny children can't learn to play.
If my gimp support role sorcery character can solo with INT and PRE, I really gotta wonder what the people who are having problems are playing.

Yeah my Telepath seems fine, the only fights where I got my ass kicked were with special master villains in 2 & 3 person missions I should not have tried to solo. But then my build was not on easy-mode (only active defense) before so I had to learn some tactics already.
The slow down of travel powers though, that seems like a real mistake. I defiantly felt less 'zip' and that is one thing I liked about the game, no 'lets make everything a tedious 10 min walk apart so the players will subscribe longer' bs.
But yeah, for a lot of builds the game was waaaaaay too easy, when I grouped for missions (rarely) everyone would wander off and dick around in different parts of the building fighting bosses solos and they were fine. That is not a challenging game or one that is fun to me.

What are they complaining about? I'm sure Mythic will offer a respec for one low price of $5.99 in their store soon.

Which would be great if Mythic had anything to do with this game.

I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
Really though.. once again, this seems like one of those totally heavy handed attempts to push the 'vision' of the game by dear old Jack-e
Jack-e's a great visionary, but his ability to do the long haul of maintainence and properly adapting to emergent playstyles and ideas is one of his greatest weaknesses.
As soon as the newness of this project wears off, hell be working to stretch his legs in a different direction, with a different game.

Let's hope not.

Game is great looking, good fun and I am enjoying it.
At the same time the respec issue is something that has been going on since Open Beta started, Cryptic knew this and decided to allow the problem to keep on thru to today.
You learn alot about MMO companies early on and all the stuff today says to me is if you want a MMO thats from a company thats really going to try and break out of the mold that every company follows this probably isn't it.
However it is fun, it's been a pretty lame few years for new MMO's and it's much better now at launch then alot of other efforts.

While the patch seems heavy-handed, the game was way too easy in Open Beta and before. Did it make you feel like a superhero? Sure. Was it so easy it became mind-numbingly boring? Yep.
But I totally agree that a patch that changes the game this much should never be pushed through on LAUNCH DAY. That just flies in the face of people's expectations. They should have gradually tuned the difficulty over the next several months.

Yeah, a lot of people are bitching about their build being unplayable, even though the patch just added some difficulty, not total game-breaking nerfage. It's one of the smoothest launches ever, and they get flak for doing something that people REQUESTED.
Balmore said on 7:39PM 9-01-2009
Yes the patch is boom boom paw! but still, yeah, whiney community!

With the exception of early entry players this isn't a change its the game at launch =P
Personally after nearly a year in beta I think the changes are fine. And its not that there is no respec, never was, its that you can only respec the last 10 levels. Which kind of points to how easy it was if people are griping that in the 3 day early entry they grinded to such a huge level that redoing 3 days of gaming now is daunting.
So again, its not a change its the official launch, this is the baseline.

@Solude Actually, they broke the retcon costs to such a degree that going back more than 1 or 2 choices was impossible, something you should know if you actually had played the game.
