One Shots: Rocketman

Champions Online is proving to be insanely popular here at the Massively offices - as if the "come play with the team" posts part didn't give that away. We're also similarly seeing tons of Champions Online screenshots flying into the One Shots mailbox daily. Some are from pre-launch like this image sent in to us by Corey T, who shares a quick note about what was happening here: [This] one is right before the server crashed, I got stuck in midair with a missile about to hit me in the back. That just looks like it's going to land in a painful place.
Hey superheroes! Whatever MMO you're in, we want to see your acts of daring. Just email them to us at oneshots AT massively DOT com along with your name, the name of the game, and a quick description. We'll post them here and give you the credit for being that awesome.

What is it with all of these unimaginative costumes? Seriously people, generic mech suit 214981948 isn't cool.

Why hasn't massively done a story on all the problems Champions Online has been having? Lag, server issues, performance problems, unscheduled maintenance, official site being down? The forums have been full of problems with some over 600 replies in less than a 24hr period.

Wut?
Lag? Had none.
Server Issues? I think there was about 10 minutes one time that the chat server and zoning server didn't work, but that's it.
Performance problems? Two systems and both have buttery smooth performance. Both use Nvidia GTX 275's.
Unscheduled Maintenance? Never noticed. The servers have been up 100% of the time I have wanted to play. I have played every minute I'm not at work or asleep since head start.
Official site being down? Hardly news worthy since the site is fine 95% of the time.
Forum full of whiners? Welcome to MMO.

Welcome to the start of another MMO. Oh no!
Most MMO's have a rocky first couple weeks. Its no excuse and companies should prepare for this but at the same time no matter what you do it seems to have problems.
Cant always have a perfect experience with these things and they are still trying to get everything sorted out. Hopefully STO will have a better start.
They just need to get more beta or alpha players to get things going.

Because video game journalism isn't in the business of pissing off their sources. This isn't the Bill Moyers Journal. MMOs get a grace period from video game sites for at least a couple months (in perpetuity if it's mmorpg.com). If you really want the dirt on this game seek alternative sources. Or wait a few months. By the end of the year it'll be a success that stands on its own merits so sites like this won't need to sugar coat everything. Or it'll be such a failure that the developers will take any publicity.

Those anti-air missiles are really cool. They are a very effective way to balance the travel powers. I also like how you can fly in low and manage to mostly avoid them. Generally though, its best to steer clear of the protected air space.

Just because your not having problems doesnt mean the other 1000+ people are not. I have been playing MMO for years and this is typical launch day problems but the lack of news on it is surprising cuz everyone just wants to talk it up and sweep the real problems under the rug.
Aganazer said on 4:26PM 9-03-2009
So far, they have been giving their personal experiences with the game. I don't think we can expect much more than that. If some hard data came out showing that a sizable percentage are having problems playing the game I'm sure it would be posted. Other than that, you're right that its typical launch day stuff. Some people are going to have problems.

@ AL same goes the other way too, because you are having problem doesn't mean everyone else is having too.
In the end, its all about personal experience at the moment, I didn't have any problem lag or stability wise and am located in EU, others may have.
by the way, why a neutral gameplay comment got greyed?

Well the server(s) are down again as I write this post
It is quite obvious on why most MMO website are not writing
about the problem that Cryptic is have with this launch,
they are just to afraid of not getting exclusives for their webiste.
which brings in ad revenue.
I played the closed beta for a bit but stopped because of the
so blatant problems that the game had.
For what ever the reason that Cryptic decided to go ahead and
go live with the game it just was just a bad decision.
The game still needs major work and polish.
This is just a sign of desperation probably coming from
Atari to push for the launch.
This does not bode well for this franchise which trying to compete with the likes
of CoX and the upcoming DCUO as well as the Marvel MMO.
Will see where it goes from here.

The base game is great. It needs severe number tweaks.
It might have the worst community I've ever seen, including Warcraft. Holy rotten tomatoes, Batman. I thought the forums today were bad enough but when the server came back on, every zone chat is still the same...people going on and on about how other people suck, people asking for groups and being told they suck, people being told to learn to play. Constantly. Even in WoW you occasionally got a break from that garbage.

Wow, people. Good job knowing the game will fail for sure when there's a few issues (that are very minor in comparison to MOST mmo launches) within DAYS of release.
I'm sure you're completely right.
Less QQ, more pew pew.

I've been playing pretty much non-stop on my crap laptop even with no problems so either I've been lucky or people are getting them selves worked in to a tizzy. I think maybe a bit from both columns but I think the game is great and am really enjoying it. Now I just need to find folks to start a super hero team. I've got a great name for it just no one to join. :-/
