Aion open beta patched and extended... by six hours?
Filed under: Fantasy, Aion, Patches, News items
We wrote about some of the issues players were experiencing in Aion open beta a couple days ago. We also mentioned an upcoming patch that aimed to fix it all. Well, it looks like that patch arrived last night. The patch isn't just performance related though -- it also addresses issues with classes, combat, quests, instanced dungeons, and much more.As a reward to all beta testers for being so helpful and patient, NCsoft has decided to extend Aion's open beta... by six hours. This means open beta will now end Monday 9/14/2009 at 8 a.m. BST (5 a.m. EST). What's that we're hearing? The collective murmurs of "Yeah... um, woot?" Well, it's better than nothing, that's for sure. Some players have urged NCsoft to extend the beta even longer for testing purposes, but we're sure many of them don't want to let go of their characters before the week-and-a-half wait to release.

There are still people that have not been able to play in OB because of bugs that didnt exist in CB. Aion is far from ready to be released.

Honestly, I have had zero issues so far since Friday evening up to right now; there is however a fairly large amount of people who are bashing the game because of GameGuard. Seems to me most of them are whining about it under the false pretense of beind stopped from using legit stuff when they really just want to use forbidden macros and what not.

Really, who?

@crsh
Oh, since you don't have any issues with Gameguard invading your system that must mean that I'm a cheat and a liar?

@ Chris
Not necessarily, but most apps blocked by GG can be used to cheat even if they do have a legit/useful use; it's no surprise to me that network diagnostic tools (for example) misused to lag opponents in online games are blacklisted. I don't think GG is a good solution to prevent hacking though, NCsoft could've picked something better, but those vocal whiners are typically cheaters being denied their candy - and yes, I understand how it can very well be a problem for folks who DON'T cheat as well.

@crsh
Google Chrome and the Logitech Control Center for my mouse are potential cheat programs? Gameguard is a massively faulty piece of technology that no one should be subjected to. I'd rather people cheat than have to put up with that.
In the end, how does cheating really affect me? Goldsellers? They've been around for ages now and while annoying they really don't screw with my gameplay. Someone else powerleveled to cap in an hour? I really don't care.
Me not being able to use my mouse or browser affects me and not in a happy sunshine kind of way.

Google Chrome works perfectly for me with GG. I'm not a fan of GG and I hope they remove it, it just seems like a useless piece of software that doesn't actually help anything but can cause people to crash.
I've never experienced any GG crashes myself though. Running Aim, Trillian, Chrome, other MMO's by accident cause I forgot Aion was open, never had any issues with it.
In any F2P games I've played that involve GG it does all of nothing to prevent hackers.

I still can't believe people are complaining about how long they've extended the beta.
Why do you possibly care? It's a beta. They extended it because according to the development team, they want to make sure their latest patch irons it out.
Deal with it. It's not the end of the worl.

Its a shame they didn't fix and of the mouse control issues, other than the turn issue while holding both buttons down :(
What really kills me about this game is the fact that ofter you cast a spell, you have to wait forever until the cast animation is complete. they need to rework the cast time bar to include the time it takes to complete the animation.

You really get used to it, just have to get the timing down. It bothered me at first but then you get to where it feels natural.
Nasq said on 12:56PM 9-13-2009
Nope, it'll never feel natural, I've been playing since the Chinese OB through most of the western closed beta's and now the open beta, and it still doesn't feel right. The cast bar should encompass the entire time it takes to cast a spell, not just the time it takes to get ready to cast.
Its really one of the few little things that annoy me about this game, and if were fixed it would make the game a lot more fluid.

Its especially hard to get used to if you've played wow for the last several years. Its controls are perfect - Aion's still feels clunky.

I really don't understand what people are talking about with this, casting has always felt great to me. Spell starts as soon as I hit the button (as long as you're in combat mode) and starts going off when the cast bar charges. What's wrong with that?
Nasq said on 6:49PM 9-15-2009
Well, its only after your cast bar finishes that your character begins its final cast animation, leaving you unable to move for up to another second after your cast bar has completed. This is the issue that most people have a problem with.

I have very little issues before (mostly server related no real client issues) and runs flawless now. I love this game and im happy to say im off Warcrack and on Aion now :).

The extra time doesn't affect me at all, except to whittle away at my resolve NOT to play the open beta at all. I've deliberately avoided it despite my friends being on and loving it because I'd had fun in closed beta and have already done my part to find and squash bugs. I've now been taking a break so that the 1.5 content could be a surprise for me and so that I wouldn't be burned out going through the early content again so soon. :)

This patch is bad for me. The global chat server is down and my game keeps crashing when I do flight transport somewhere. Very annoying but at least it's only beta. Hopefully stuff like that gets fixed for live.
