NCsoft's strict server balance policy for Aion
Filed under: Fantasy, Aion, New titles, News items
As a result of some vague server messages and a confused player base trying to reserve their characters in Aion's preselect period, NCsoft tossed up an informative preselect server status page. This page lists all European and North American servers and labels them as either 'Temporarily Locked,' 'Elyos/Asmodian Only,' or blank. Some of the servers are jam-packed, while others have plenty of room to grow (no labels). NCsoft has temporarily locked new character creation on the higher population servers until the lower population servers catch up. To maintain faction balance they are also keeping track of Asmodian and Elyos populations. If one side becomes too dominant, new characters of that faction are disabled until the other side can catch up.
This has led to some frustration from preorder customers who fear they may not be able to roll on a server with their guild mates. Apparently, everything will work out as the lower population servers start filling up, so our fingers are crossed. We've all seen what can happen when companies get too overzealous with their server launch plans. The situation could be worse.
Update #1 (Sep 19 @ 10:48am EDT): Looks like all servers have been unlocked, but 8/24 of them are 'Elyos Only.'
Update #2 (Sep 19 @ 12:30pm EDT): Some players are reporting they can make Asmodian characters on the 'Elyos Only' servers. This is probably due to a lag period between real-time server status and web updates.
Update #3 (Sep 19 @ 3:00pm EDT): It appears that restrictions have been lifted (see http://twitter.com/aion_ayase).

I believe it will all work out in the end and people will still be able to join the server/faction their friends are on. I got into Zikel before it was locked but my two RL friends did not -- today. I expect the restrictions to be loosened as the population distribution equalizes. Patience, young Daeva, patience.
I also expect another set of servers to be announced/opened prior to launch day.

No offense but it's easy to say "Patience" when you got the server and race of your choice. When you got in and got your name and server, you don't really have the right to tell us to be patient... It's like telling somebody to "Walk it off" when their Parents die, when you haven't had the same thing happen to you to know what it feels like (a little extreme but you get the point of what I mean :D.
I'm going to be paying for this game (I'm already being billed no matter what, so it's as if I paid already), and nearly every server I tried was "Elyos Only". I don't care if it's not balanced, I'm not going to be forced to play an Elyos character, or lose out on saving my name like I was promised I'd be able to.
So anyway I just saved my name on the Elyos side, and hopefully I will be able to delete it and remake it later on the other side sometime. I'm not going to play Elyos just because they don't have enough players. Seriously I tried 7 different servers today and they all said "Elyos Only" when I went to try them!

Because not getting to pick your class/race/server before everybody else is the same thing as your losing your parents. I hope your parents really do die so you can see how goddamn slack-jawed retarded you sound. My parents died when I was very young, but not too young to understand what pain and loss is. You are a disgusting abomination, less than human, for even BEGINNING to compare a VIDEO GAME to that amount of pain.
Would you have been faster you would have gotten your desired spots anyway, I logged in minutes after the servers went up, I have 2 characters rolled on a locked server right now.

What annoys me about server selection is all the non-RP players who rush the RP servers. I never understand why they do that. Then you try and RP on the RP server and get heckled.
I wish MMOs would make "offical" RP servers with a new rule - if you give someone crap about RPing in the local channel, you can get banned from the server. You character is moved to a non-RP server of your choice. Players would report you if you talked smack about their RPing. After a few reports the chat logs are reviewed by a GM and if they look like you were giving people a hard time, you're booted.
Maybe even have hardcore RP where if you talk too much out of character in global/local chat channels (no Chuck Norris jokes here!) players can report you. Same rules as above. Too much OOC chatter and you're moved to a server that better fits your playstyle.
I miss the days when people really RPed in MMOs. It does enhance the gameplay experience if you try it. And for those who don't like it... again, why do they roll on RP servers?

Garmr - My best friend that I spent every day with died if that makes you feel better. But thanks for the well wishing saying you hope my Parents die. You obviously haven't learned your lesson yet, you are a horrible piece of trash to wish that on anybody else. I'd say that I wished your family died one by one until you did learn your lesson, but nobody else deserves to die based on your ignorance.
Anyway I wasn't comparing people dying to a video game, I was saying you don't have the right to tell someone something based on something you haven't experienced yourself. Pay more attention next time before you get all huffy. And I can't believe these comments are getting written here, feel free to vote them down and turn them near invisible :D

Forcing server/race choices without exception is utter bullshit. MMOs are social games, and you should have no issues if you want to join up with your friends. Why should you have to wait a few days to be able to join them?
Better methods exist...one in particular I have yet to see duplicated is the FFXI WorldPass...it's a code obtained in-game for a small amount of coin that you can give to your friends so they can join your server (in FFXI server assignment is(was?) random without one).
I agree they need to have some stern guidelines to maintain stability and balance, but no exception absolutes are not the answer either. Really this, combined with server queues (saw one at ~2700 last night...3 hr wait!!!) has kind of made me worry that NCSoft is going to fumble and screw this up.
Server queues and being unable to join friends are two big things that will immediately get people to quit...and spread the word around. Even if they are a non-issue in a week or two, it can seriously impact the initial success of the game simply by word of mouth...most people read sensational headlines, not entire articles. And few games recover from bad launches.

This is a necessary evil to prevent servers becoming dead later on if some players decide to leave.
I luckily got on my server of choice, as did a lot of my legion. They'll be re-opened back up on headstart to allow more players in too.

Wow, i really was expecting Azmo to have the lower population to the bright wyed white winged Elyos, but if the current trend is anything to go by looks like everyone wants to take a wild on the dark side.

Are you kidding? Asmo is the emo/dark/evil-looking race, every teenager is rushing to get one; especially telling when you consider that classes are exactly the same on both sides, it's just about looks.
SleepingPanda said on 1:01PM 9-19-2009
@crsh No. Classes aren't exactly the same on both sides. Certain factions' classes have certain strengths the other doesn't. It's fairly unique.

Yeah, and personally I like the norse references that the asmodian side has, much more interesting. Oh, and grave robbing from a bunch of zombies when you are lvl 6 or so. =P

It's actually a really good idea. I wish more MMO companies did this for launch. It will help to get people distributed evenly among the servers so you don't have super overpopulated servers and near empty servers.

The problem with this type of system is it only address the pop at that particular moment.
Example...
I make a toon taking up an active spot, play him for a few hours and deside I don't like him and never log it on again...no biggy right? But while I was doing that some other guy couldn't get on my server to join his guildies because of the pop lock.
Or...what about all the folks who make toons just to reserve their names...
On and on....
You will also be in direct competition with Gold Farmers who will ensure they have plenty of folks onhand the second that game goes live to suck up as many spots as possible to run their business on every server.
Best intentions but the reality is not going to work out.

You do realize that during preselection you can only make two toons across your whole account, right? So you're not going to be reserving a ton of names nor will you make more than one character you have no intent of playing. :p
Even on release, you'll be capped at 8 characters across your account- enough for one of every class. So sure, you might have a few that you have no intention of ever using, but there won't be that many.
myr said on 12:24AM 9-19-2009
Much better than FFXI's random server selection, unless you have a friend already there that paid game currency to give you a pass. It was like that for a few years before they let you choose your server at creation...
I'm glad, personally. Sure I might be a little peeved if I were locked away from my guild, but it's not like you're locked out for good.
