First of all, the lifetime subscription has returned to the 200 dollar price tag once more, making it very lucrative to grab a lifetime subscription if you don't have one already. Everyone, hooray for the nicely priced lifetime subscription.
Also, any current or former player who changes their subscription over to a multi-month package (three, six, or 12 months) will get the Siege of Mirkwood for absolutely free. Yes, that's right, you heard us, free. The multi-month package deal, however, does not include the lifetime subscription. Sorry.
The LotRO adventurer's pack is also being offered as well with the expansion. The pack is a 20 dollar bundle of two more character slots, 20 slot shared storage amongst all of your characters on one server, a new mount (the Dusty Nimblefoot Goat,) and The Harbringer's Cloak, which gives a temporary speed boost of 8%.
Lifetime subscription members can now rejoice, because if they purchase the adventurer's pack they get the Siege of Mirkwood expansion for free. See, there's a deal for everyone.
Both packs will go live on December 1st, but you can pre-order early by visiting the website and upgrading early via your Turbine account. If you're looking for more information on what the Siege of Mirkwood will offer, look no further than our interview with Turbine regarding the brand new expansion pack.

Expansion packs for MMO's that charge a monthly fee should be free reguardless.

I am already a 3 month sub... I will happily buy the expansion, but I do have my fingers crossed that this means I already get it free... or do I have to upgrade to 6 month? or am I completely in-eligable since I am already on a multi month and thus cannot upgrade to a multi month

This was a note from one of Turbine's marketing people on the forums today:
"If you already subscribe via a multi-month plan you're all set. Just keep your plan active through the launch of Mirkwood and it's free!"

Check when your 3-month sub renews. Mine's up in a few weeks, and I'm just going to let it expire, then resub to the 3-month plan and get Mirkwood free.

Well, a subscription really just pays for the servers, maintenance, customer support and all of the ongoing operational costs. If you want new content on top of that, the money has to come from somewhere. There are basically just two options: a one-time fee for the new content, or a much higher subscription rate. If you charge a higher subscription, you'll likely have fewer subscribers, and many will pay for content they may never see, which is not cool at all.
I really think Turbine's doing the right thing for its customers with this approach.

I agree! what they are doing is awesome! Turbine has been doing a great job with LOTRO Content and management wise. I like another MMO better, but LOTRO is still a fun MMO! the 3 month option is what keeps me coming back cause I am paying $10 a month.

What? Plenty of Devs offer free expansions, CCP is on its way to its 11th for Eve Online for example.

And LOTRO has already had 9 free content updates in the two years it's been out plus 1 paid expansion. This will be the 2nd paid expansion for LOTRO with more free content updates coming next year when Volume 3 launches in 1st quarter 2010. LOTRO is also getting a DX11 update in the 1st quarter 2010. WOO HOO!
